Joseph Henry

Joseph C. Henry, age 96, of Elmira, NY, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024. Joe was born on May 18, 1928, in Jersey City, NJ, a son of the late Charles and Mary Curtis Henry.
Following graduation from St. Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ, in 1946, Joe entered the United States Marine Corps where he served honorably for three years. He then attended Fordham University, Bronx, NY, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business. A retired school teacher, Joe taught in the Horseheads Central School District for 32 years.
Over the years, Joe was active with the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), the American Legion and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was an active communicant at St. Mary Our Mother Church for almost 70 years and a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order.
Joe was devoted to his family and treasured the memories he made with them. He will be greatly missed. He is predeceased by his wife, Lillian Gartner Henry, in 2019; five sisters: Marie, Florence, Frances, Edna and Claire; and 2 brothers: Charles and identical twin, Robert. Joe is survived by his children: Brother Paul Henry, AA, of Fiskdale, MA, Janet and Kevin Kilcommons of Annandale, NJ, Mary Julia Hotaling of Horseheads, NY, and Robert Henry of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Claire Kilcommons and fiancé Frank Sorrenti, Grace Kilcommons, Ruby Hotaling, Georgia Henry and Gwyneth Henry; sister-in-law, Annette Hussey of Rosedale, NY; many beloved nephews, nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.
The family will welcome relatives and friends to Sullivan's Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St. at Rt. 13, Horseheads, NY on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 from 4-7PM.
The officers and members of the A.O.H. will meet at Sullivan's Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, at 6:30PM, to conduct a service for our brother Joe. Signed, Rick Hitchcock, President.
Joe's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 9 AM at St. Mary Our Mother Church, Horseheads, NY. He will be laid to rest alongside Lillian at St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery, Horseheads, NY with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joe's name to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Ave, Elmira, NY 14903.
