With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Joseph Edward Johnson Jr., affectionately known as Joe, who left this world peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia on August 19, 2025, at the age of 72. He was born on April 12, 1953, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, and dedicated his life to family, service, and the pursuit of knowledge and joy.

Joe will be profoundly missed by his beloved wife, Nehir Johnson, with whom he shared 34 wonderful years of marriage, and their cherished daughter, Amie Yasemin Johnson. He is also survived by his brother, David Johnson, and sisters, Patricia Hazel and Sandra Jordan-Albers, who reside in Florida and North Carolina, respectively.

Joe dedicated 22 years to the U.S. Air Force, retiring honorably as a Master Sergeant. His service included invaluable contributions as a Military Police and Information Technology Officer, during which he earned numerous accolades, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He served in critical operations such as the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm/Shield, exemplifying his unwavering commitment to his country.

Following his military career, Joe transitioned into various IT roles, culminating as a respected IT System Administrator, and owned a towing business before retiring in 2017.

Known for his vibrant spirit and love of life, Joe enjoyed tending to his garden, creating beautiful woodwork, exploring new culinary experiences, and sharing countless joyful moments with family and friends. He was often heard saying, "Don't stress, it's just another challenge to overcome," a mantra that many of his loved ones remember fondly. The sounds of music from the 60s to today filled his home, while books, movies, and computer games became cherished pastimes.

As we reflect on Joe's life, we celebrate a man whose adventures spanned across the globe, as well as countless weekends filled with happy hour drinks at sunset and holiday decorations that warmed the hearts of those around him. His presence will forever remain in our hearts, as will his indomitable spirit and love for life.

Family and friends are invited to come together to honor Joe's life and legacy. A veteran's memorial service will take place on September 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery Pavillion, located at 5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA. A reception will take place afterward at the Bayside Funeral Home, beginning at 12:30 PM, where we will gather to reminisce and share our cherished memories of this remarkable man.

As we bid farewell, we take comfort in knowing that though Joe has left us in body, his spirit will forever be intertwined with our lives.

There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts. Greatly loved, deeply missed. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. A life well lived.
