In Loving Memory of Joseph Melvin Johnson III
Born in Washington, D.C. – Passed away in the early morning of October 6, 2025
Joseph Melvin Johnson III, a devoted husband, father, brother, son, and friend to many passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of October 6, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Rebecca Rice Johnson, his cherished children, Joseph Zachary Johnson and Casey Rice Johnson, his sister Andrea Woodrum, his mother Judith DiGiovanni, and his two faithful canine companions, Max and Molly.
Raised in Waldorf, Maryland, Joe's life reflected an extraordinary combination of professional excellence and personal warmth. In his early years, he was known not only for his technical acumen but also for his vibrant musical talent. As the lead singer in a popular Southern Maryland band, Joe filled local hot spots with energy and spirit. A night forever etched in the memories of his colleagues and friends was when dozens of them chartered limousines from Washington, D.C., to Waldorf to see Joe perform before a packed house-a magical evening that showcased his passion for music. Joe later retired from his singing career to focus on his family and his professional journey.
Professionally, Joe built an extraordinary career in the world of mainframe computing and systems management. His initial success propelled Joe into the ranks of the industry's most trusted Mainframe Systems Programming SMEs. Over time, he evolved into a highly respected Systems and Program Management professional, leveraging his expertise as a certified PMP to guide numerous mission-critical financial and federal agency programs. His reputation for integrity, humility and delivery made him a trusted advisor in every organization he touched.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joe was defined by his love for his family, his generosity toward friends, and his enduring curiosity and optimism. His humor and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Although Joe retired from his singing career, music never left him and he would always treat his family and friends to a song or two.. His love for music was only rivaled by his love for D.C. sports. An avid fan of all of the district's teams, he found great joy in sharing these pastimes with those closest to him. Joe also found relaxation in keeping a small vegetable garden in his backyard and sharing the bounty of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and squash with anyone who asked.
Joe's life was a testament to dedication-dedication to his craft, his family, his colleagues, and his passions. While his passing leaves a profound sense of loss, his legacy of love, camaraderie and cherished memories endures in the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Joe's life on Friday, October 17th from 2-4 pm at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, Va 20175
Flowers will be accepted but you also have the opportunity to make a donation in Joseph's honor to the American Cancer Society. https://donate.cancer.org/?campaign=default&lang=en&_gl=1*1iccij9*_gcl_au*NzQ0MTgzMzAwLjE3NTk4OTg5MjE.*_ga*MTcwMzYzMDc0OS4xNzUwMjc1OTgz*_ga_12CJLLFFQT*czE3NTk4OTg5MjIkbzEkZzAkdDE3NTk4OTg5MjIkajYwJGwwJGgw
