Joseph Feighner Johnston Jr., 86, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully on November 9th, 2025.
Joe was born January 7th, 1939, in Montgomery, WV, to Joseph Feighner Johnston Sr. And Roberta Stemple Johnston. He spent his summers with his many aunts and uncles at the Stemple family house in Thomas. He graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelors in Industrial Management. While there, he was a member of the wrestling team, President and choral leader of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. During this time he enjoyed being close with his Johnston family in Morgantown. He proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Joe spent his early career in Management with Sears and Montgomery Ward. He was later the President and owner of his own Screen Printing and Embroidery company for over 40 years.
He was a past Master at Piedmont Pioneer Lodge No. #685 and recent member of Enterprise Lodge No. #752. He cared deeply about the community and never met a stranger.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Roberta and Joe Sr.. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann Cross Johnston; and two daughters, Stephanie Sweet (Michael), and Staci Jo Johnston.
Dad reiterated in his last few months to us that he was very fortunate throughout his life. Growing up in Parkersburg and attending school where his dad was a Principal and mother a Mathematics teacher, led him to walk a very straight and narrow path through Christ. “Joey” was a very supportive and hard working husband and father. He showed up to all sports and concerts and even continued his support as Stephanie transitioned from athlete to coach, Staci from performer to stagehand, and Ann as a paralegal and antique small business owner.
Some of our fondest memories were on family vacations. A recent highlight was in Oak Island where he was gifted the opportunity to return to his love of piloting a Cessna 220 aircraft. He enjoyed golf, was a lifelong collector of model trains, and enjoyed bowling long after he managed a bowling alley in Florida.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 PM Friday, November 14, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. The service will immediately follow at 4 PM. Burial will take place at 2 PM Saturday, November 15th, 2025, at Beulah Baptist Church in Kingsport, TN.
