Jean was born on December 10, 1928, in Ashland, Virginia, the second child of Maria Doswell Meredith and Alfred Wilmer Turner. She was delivered at the family home in Hanover, Virginia, by her grandfather, Dr. William Meredith.
After completing her public education, Jean graduated from Longwood College with a degree in Art and Education. While in college, she met Richard John Basto, a student at nearby Hampden-Sydney College. They married in 1950 and shared a devoted partnership for 66 years.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard John Basto, and her four siblings. She is survived by her four children—John (Susan), Jennifer (Jim), Roger (Faye), and Christopher (Kimberly)—as well as 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Capturing the full arc of Jean’s life and the impact she had on those she loved is nearly impossible; words can only begin to express the lessons she imparted. Though known as a sister, teacher, wife, and mother, her greatest teachings were those of love, empathy, and forgiveness. She often reminded us, “Love does not die. People do, so pass love on".
If you are fortunate enough to own one of her paintings, know that you carry a piece of her love with you.
A private ceremony will be held on Friday, November 21st.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is respectively assisting the family.
