Joseph Donald Jordan commonly known as "J.D.", age 81, a longtime resident of Gallinas Canyon, NM passed away peacefully on August 11th 2022, surrounded by his numerous family. He was born in Clevland Mississippi, on October 25th, 1940, to John Andrew and Gracie Fran Jordan. He was a longtime Catholic member of Immaculate Conception in Las Vegas, NM.
J.D. served in the United States Marine Corp as an aircraft Safety Equipment Technician. While stationed at MCAS El Toro, California, Corporal Jordan met and subsequently married Lance Corporal Clara Benavidez. They were blessed with their first daughter, Donna Marie in February 1963. After their service in the Marine Corps, J.D. and Clara moved to Clevland Mississippi. Two years later, J.D. and Clara were blessed again, however, this time, they received a double blessing with Steve and Gary being born in September 1965. Around 1966, J.D. and Clara moved to Clara's hometown in Las Vegas, NM. A year later they were blessed with the arrival of Jonathan Jeffrey in July 1967. J.D. worked a few jobs, one with the parachute factory and another at Ifield's. Clara encouraged him to apply for a job with the New Mexico State Highway Department. Her encouragement paid off and he was hired later in 1967. J.D. started as a rock crusher operator and heavy equipment operator, he obtained his CDL and become a transport driver. After several years, J.D. reached his final position with NMDOT as Safety Coordinator for District 4. In December 1974, J.D. and Clara were blessed with their second daughter, Patricia Faye Lynn. In 1979, J.D. and Clara decided to build a house on their property in Gallinas Canyon. Over the next two years, they worked diligently to make this dream come true. The family moved into their newly built home in the summer of 1981.
J.D. retired from the Highway Department after 27 years. Anyone who knew J.D., knew he found it very difficult to remain inactive. Shortly after he retired from the Highway Department, he began work at Romero's Feed and Supply. He also worked at Sears and Hacienda Home Center. J.D. finally decided to stop working for good, around 2009. Years after his divorce from Clara, J.D. met Lucy Kemm and spent the next 22 years with her. Lucy took exceptional care of J.D., especially the last several months. Lucy provided necessary and unnecessary rides to numerous appointments in and out of town and of course, Harbor Freight and Walmart.
J.D. was instrumental in establishing the La Placitas volunteer fire station in Gallinas Canyon. He loved to attend his grandchildren's sporting events, both in and out of town. One thing he truly enjoyed, was being in Gallinas Canyon with his sons Steve, Gary and Jonathan. He would make any excuse to go to the ranch. He enjoyed doing anything and everything from cutting wood, mending fences to helping his sons. A few years back, he purchased a workshop where he spent endless hours, tinkering with whatever would keep him busy. He cherished the times his grandchildren would visit him in his shop. This gave him the perfect opportunity to teach them about different tools, how to use them and of course, put them to work helping him with various tasks.
Anyone who knew J.D., knew he enjoyed making people feel welcome and placing a smile on their faces. His door was always open, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He passed these amazing attributes to his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his: parents, Andrew "Lucky" Jordan and Gracie Fran "Mimi" Manley, brother's Jimmy and John Wayne "Rocky" Jordan, brother in-law Billy Rogers and his beloved son, Steve Paul Jordan.
