Joseph Kalinowski Obituary

Joseph Stanley Kalinowski GREENVILLE - We are saddened to announce the passing of Joseph Stanley Kalinowski, who died on January 12, 2024 in hospice at Duke University Hospital. Joe was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 7, 1958 to Mary (Graceffa) Kalinowski and Anthony Stanley Kalinowski, and he grew up in Maynard, Massachusetts with his brother Tony and sister Fran. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his two siblings. Joe played football for Maynard High School (class of 1976) and the University of Connecticut (class of 1981). He later attended graduate school at Northeastern University (where he met his wife) and obtained his doctorate at the University of Connecticut. Joe was married to the love of his life Barbara (Oxman) Kalinowski for 34 years until her death on April 21, 2023. Joe is survived by his two daughters Alissa Sadie Kalinowski and Amy Ilana Kalinowski, who were by his side when he passed. Joe, a lifelong stutterer, chose a career where he found purpose in his pain. Joe worked as a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at East Carolina University from 1995 to 2016, dedicating his life to helping individuals who suffered from stuttering. He authored numerous publications and held several patents for treatments for stuttering and other fluency disorders. Notably, Joe was inducted as a fellow to the National Academy of Inventors, an organization nationally recognized as the highest professional distinction awarded to academic inventors. Joe's love language was teaching. When his daughters were children, he taught them the Presidents of the United States and the Gettysburg Address at Burger King and served as their tour guide on impromptu visits to historical sites during family trips to Massachusetts. As his daughters grew into adults, Joe continued to find ways to share his love of learning with them, and they reciprocated that love. A graveside service will be held at Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville, NC on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00 pm. A post-funeral gathering will be held at Joe's home in Greenville, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joe's honor and memory to the PKD Foundation (https://pkdcure.org/give/) and the Maynard Booster Club, 1 Tiger Drive, Maynard, MA 01754 (please contact [email protected] if you have any questions).
