Joseph Kauzlaric Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John J. Buettgen Funeral Home - Schofield on Mar. 30, 2026.
Joseph (Joe) Kauzlaric, 83, of Wausau, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026.

Joe was born August 27, 1942, in Eagle River, Wisconsin to the late John and Catherine Kauzlaric. Growing up on the farm in Eagle River, he had fond memories with his siblings and friends playing hockey, swimming and hunting. Even after moving away, he had a had a deep connection to the beauty and tranquility of the Northwoods.

Joe played hockey throughout his life – on the frozen lakes of Eagle River to rinks throughout the Midwest. He enjoyed coaching and watching hockey and spent many years sharpening skates for young hockey players. He truly loved the game and community it built. His dedication left a lasting impact on many young players he mentored over the years.

Joe served his country as a medic in the Vietnam War with the United States Army. The experience had a lasting impact on many aspects of his life. He carried pride in his service and patriotism with him throughout his life.

Joe eventually met the love of his life, Eloise, and they were married for more than 25 years. Together they had three children and had many happy memories of time spent together - fishing as a family and at the hockey rink. Eloise preceded Joe in death on July 10, 2005.

Joe had an incredible work ethic and worked in the underground utilities field for many years with North States Utilities. He sincerely enjoyed the camaraderie of those he worked with.

He was known as a genuinely kind and generous person - someone who would help anyone in need without hesitation. Joe found joy in life's simple pleasures. One of his greatest traditions was organizing the family's annual Eagle River fish fry, where he proudly took on the role of host and fryer, ensuring everyone had a great time.

Joe is survived by his children, Scott (Tera), Ryan (Katie), and Daniel; his grandchildren, Lilee and Iris; his great-grandchild, Layton; and his siblings, John (Barb), Florence "Flossy," and Edith. In addition to his wife, Joe is preceded in death by his parents and multiple siblings.

Joe will be remembered for his warmth, generous nature, jovial spirit and wit.

The family would like to thank the staff at Our House Senior Living, Village Caregiving, and St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, April 17, 2026, at John J Buettgen Funeral Home, 948 Grand Ave, Schofield. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am until the time services at the funeral home. Military honors will be given by American Legion Montgomery-Plant-Dudley Post 10. John J Buettgen Funeral Home is assisting the family.
