Joseph W. Krupinski, a longtime Sea Cliff resident, passed away on December 15, 2024 at the age of 86. Joe was born June 2, 1938 in Bayonne, NJ to Joseph J. and Marcella Krupinski. Joe’s formative years were spent in Uniondale, NY and he graduated from Hempstead High School, Hempstead, NY. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Hofstra University.
Joe is survived by his sister Carol, his daughter, Jennifer, her husband Terence and his grandchildren Colin and Kendra, as well as his daughter Amy and her sons Alex and Justin. Joe is predeceased by his brother Mike and his second wife Lee.
A proud graduate of Hofstra University, Joseph's love for lacrosse and his impressive skills on the field earned him the nickname "Crease Man" among his teammates. After completing his studies, Joe was in the Army for several years, serving in Germany. Joe dedicated over 25 years to his work as a sports journalist at Long Island Newsday, where he made a lasting impact. After covering major sports teams early in his career, Joe eventually shifted his journalistic focus to high school sports and then leisure sports. This allowed his true passion for telling the human side of sports to emerge. Joe was masterful at drawing out the passion and motivation of athletes and then translating that into thoughtful human interest stories.
Joe adored the village of Sea Cliff, where he lived for 50+ years. Joe was an active and devoted volunteer within the community. Joe was an auxiliary policeman as well as a proud member of the Sea Cliff Civic Association and the Sea Cliff Landmarks Association. Joe ran for mayor of Sea Cliff twice, and though he did not make it into political office, he was nonetheless referred to unofficially as the ‘mayor’ of Sea Cliff, due to his deep ties to people within the community. He also brought joy to many by performing musical entertainment at local nursing homes. In his most cherished role, Joe spread holiday cheer at the Post Office as Santa Claus, delighting children and adults alike with his warmth and good cheer.
Joe’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his infectious spirit, his dedication to family, and his commitment to his community. His legacy of kindness, service, and love will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
A private celebration of life was held in February 2025. If you would like to commemorate Joe’s community service, please make a donation to the Sea Cliff Landmarks Society, PO Box 69, Sea Cliff, NY 11570 or to the Sea Cliff Civic Association, PO Box 62, Sea Cliff, NY 11579.
