Joseph McIntyre, 88, of Scranton, died Sunday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife of 68 years is the former Marie Magnani.

Born in the Nativity section of Scranton, he was a son of the late Edward and Philomena Manley McIntyre. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish until its closing, and later a member of St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish. He attended South Catholic High School, where he was a gifted athlete on the football and basketball teams.

Joe owned and operated the Big M bar on Cedar Avenue for over 12 years. After its closing, he held various positions in the city of Scranton, including director of community development and superintendent of parks and recreation. He later worked for the State of Pennsylvania in the worker's compensation department, and for the Scranton School District, from which he retired. He was also a member of the South Side-Minooka Democratic Association, where he served as chairman of the membership committee. Joe's athleticism was recognized in 1979, when he was inducted into the Chic Feldman Scranton Area Sports Hall of Fame.

Joe enjoyed walks around Lake Scranton and spending time with his family. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Brutico and husband, Carmen; Theresa Nealis and husband, Joe; and Kathleen Patrizi and fiancé, Michael O'Connor; three sons, Joseph, Patrick and Michael McIntyre; 13 grandchildren, Thomas, Robert and Christopher Miller, Julie Scott, Tara Conway and Jeffrey Keating, David and Danielle Patrizi, Patrick and Katie McIntyre, and Trinity, Michael and Logan McIntyre; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and John McIntyre; and five sisters, Ann and Margaret McIntyre, Mary Murray, Theresa Goscinski and Delores Sciascio.

The funeral will be Friday, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m., at Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. Those planning on attending Mass on Friday are asked to proceed directly to the church.
