Joseph Misto Obituary

WESTERLY - Joseph A. 'Chief' Misto Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of 63 years to his lifelong partner and beloved wife, Gayle (Reid) Misto. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love, faith, and family. Together, they shared decades of laughter, support, and devotion, inspiring all who knew them.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Joseph was the son of the late Louis Misto, Sr. and Rosemary Palumbo Misto. He is survived by his sister-in-law Estelle Misto and was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Louis Misto Jr and sister, Rosemary Sanquedolce.

Joseph grew up in Danielson, Connecticut, before moving to Westerly while in grammar school. A proud graduate of Westerly High School, he remained deeply connected to his hometown and its people throughout his life.

Family was always at the center of Joseph's life. He was a loving father to Joseph A. Misto Jr. and wife Kara, and Dr. Holly Misto, a proud grandfather to Everett Misto and James Misto, and a cherished presence to his extended family of many nieces and nephews. His family and many dear friends brought him endless joy, and he was a constant source of guidance, encouragement, and unwavering love.

Service to others was a defining part of who he was. Professionally, he devoted many years to The Westerly Jewelry, rising to manager and becoming a trusted figure in the community. Known for his skill, integrity, and personal care, he helped countless customers select the perfect diamonds to mark life's special moments.

His commitment to service extended to the Westerly Fire Department. Beginning as a volunteer firefighter with the Ladder Company, he rose through the officer ranks and was later elected Fire Chief, a role he deeply loved and carried with great pride and responsibility. He led with dedication, compassion, and thoughtful innovation, always protecting and serving his community. As a member of the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association and the New England Fire Chiefs Association, his leadership left a lasting mark on both the department and the town he loved.

A kind and compassionate man, Joseph was known for his quick wit and warm personality. He had a natural gift of conversation and could connect easily with anyone he met. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or stranger, he genuinely enjoyed learning about other people and made others feel truly seen and valued. He was also an animal lover, whose affection for pets reflected his gentle and caring nature.

In retirement, Joseph and his wife spent their winter months in Florida, enjoying life side by side. The rest of the year was devoted to time with his family and friends, tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, caring for his yard, and enjoying the companionship of his beloved animals. Over the years, he especially loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, always cheering them on with great pride. An avid sports fan, he faithfully cheered on the New York Yankees and the New England Patriots.

Joseph will be remembered for his devotion to family, faith, and community, and a life lived with humility, generosity and grace. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered love, support, and friendship throughout Joseph's life. Many thanks to Hope Hospice, Father Josemaria Barbin and Father Charbel Boutstnay for their compassionate care and support during his final weeks.

To the family of Joseph Misto,
It is heart-breaking to learn of the passing of one of the leaders of our town of Westerly. Joe's obituary tells his story beautifully. He held positions that brought him in touch with many people, and his thoughtful, caring, and kind personality fit the bill perfectly. My thanks to him for his many years of unselfish giving. It is wonderful to learn that he enjoyed some years of retirement. Sincere condolences to Gail, family, and friends who were closely acquainted with Joe. May you find comfort in the many years you were able to share with this special gentleman.

Misto Family,
Sorry to learn of the passing of your dad and grandfather. We both graduated from WHS I was a year or so behind him. He was a great salesman for Westerly Jewelry very kind and polite. I still have the silverware set he sold me. I recall him telling me if i bought the set now I would get a $5.00 discount.
He talked me into buy the set, I found out later that he paid out of his pocket the $5.00 discount.
Our friendship continued Joe was the Coach of Pucci Little league Baseball team he chose my son Lonny on his team. Thanks for sharing the team photo Ted.
The late Vero Morrone and I took over coaching his team when he stepped down.
We both worked for the Town of Westerly Joe as a Firemen and later as a very well respected Chief.
I worked for the Westerly Police Department and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. We shared several coffee shops together. We with his good friend and ex Fire Department buddy Ernie Campbell often met at local yard sales.
Rest in peace Joe you left a footprint on mother earth for others to follow.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Joe´s passing. He was one of the kindest and most down-to-earth people I´ve had the privilege to know. Joe helped me get my start with the ladder company, and I´ll always be grateful for his support and encouragement. I truly enjoyed our conversations over the years and will always remember his honesty and warmth. He will be greatly missed. Godspeed, Joe.

Also - I found this photo that I thought I'd share. I think this is from 1977.

In case you don't recognize or remember everyone:

the back row is your dad (of course), Robert Ayers, Chris Sullivan, Jeff Faulise, Mike Gouvin, Lonny Brown and coach Sam Terranova.

middle row: Dave (or Kevin) Corina, Roland Parilla, Ted Marzilli, Kevin Terranova, coach Garafola

front row: I can't remember the name of the kid on the left but that's Jimmy Pratt on the right.

Wonderful memories.

Ted.

Hi Holly and Jay,

I'm sad to hear of your dad's passing. As I mentioned to Holly the last time I saw her, I still think of your dad as my Little League baseball coach. The kids who played for Pucci Carpet were lucky to have him. I remember him as a super friendly and positive person, and a well-known person (and personality) around town.

Sincere condolences,

Ted (although I was always Teddy to him) Marzilli.
