Joseph "Jerry" Painchaud Jr., 82, of Conway, South Carolina passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025. He was born on December 9, 1942, in Hartford, CT and was the son of the late Joseph Painchaud Sr. and Loretta (Desmarais) Painchaud.
Jerry was raised in Hartford, CT, where he attended Catholic school, and later lived in South Windsor, CT for a short time before graduating from South Windsor High School. After graduating from high school, Jerry took a job with the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Over the years he progressed there from working with outside survey crews in his early years, to moving to contract work for the majority of his career. His career there spanned 40 years.
In his very early days at the Department of Transportation, he met and married Rita Cangemi. Despite their young age when they married, their marriage endured the test of time. They were married for 63 years until Jerry's passing.
Jerry enjoyed traveling on many vacations, watching sports, was an avid reader, and enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a man of faith throughout his life. He spent many years volunteering with the Church as a Eucharistic Minister, and also with Church outreach functions. After retiring, Jerry and Rita created many happy memories while visiting their 2nd home in the Myrtle Beach area prior to relocating to Conway SC full-time in 2016.
Jerry is survived by his wife Rita (Cangemi) Painchaud of Conway, SC, his two children: Dean Painchaud and his wife Susan of Cromwell, CT, and Cheryl (Painchaud) Tomastik and her husband Robert of Rocky Hill, CT, and his 5 grandchildren: Joseph Tomastik, Nicholas Painchaud and his wife Sabrina, Ryan Tomastik and his fiancee Emily, Gina Painchaud, and Steven Tomastik. Jerry was predeceased by his parents.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint James Church of the Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish, 767 Elm Street, Rocky Hill, CT on Tuesday November 25, 2025, at 10:30AM. He will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Park, 580 Elm St, Rocky Hill, CT following the mass. Family and friends are welcome to attend this service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.org/).
