Joseph Richard Patterson III, 59 years old, born on June 19, 1965, in Jersey City, New Jersey, went home to be with the Lord on June 2, 2025, after a 10-year journey on dialysis and battling multiple blood infections. Anyone that knows Joe knows he was a fighter. He survived multiple stays in ICU, many surgeries and even when the odds were against him, he would find the strength to fight to stay with his family. So, passing unexpectedly was something that was unexpected even with his illnesses.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Patterson (Nagle); his father, Joseph Patterson, Jr.; his uncle, Richard "Dick" Patterson; his aunt, Doris Hatfield (Johnny); his uncle, David Nagle; his best friend and cousin, Ricky Patterson; and his many other aunts, uncles, cousins and family in Jersey City, South Carolina, and Norton, Ohio that he loved dearly.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 41 years and his high school sweetheart, Michele Patterson (Baughman); his daughter, Tia Campbell (Patterson); his son, Joe Patterson (his fiancé, Paige); his grandchildren: Brenna and Blake Campbell; his aunt, Alice (Gary) Wagner; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins in Jersey City, as well as cousins here in Norton, Ohio and surrounding communities.
Joe grew up in the Norton community where he attended Norton High School, there he played football and wrestled, and he still holds wrestling records to this day. He also coached high school football for Norton. He was a long-time employee of B&C Industries and JR Wheel as a supervisor. Anyone that knows Joe knows he was a diehard fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes; there wasn't a Saturday or Sunday that football wasn't on in the Patterson house! He was also an avid gardener. He loved his yard and took pride in how it looked. But the MOST important thing to Joe was his family and took an active role in teaching his son, Joe, football, baseball and wrestling, his daughter, Tia, softball and his grandkids, Brenna softball and Blake wrestling and baseball. He couldn't wait for his family trips to the beach and his sunset walks on the beach with his wife, Michele, and his fires at Outer Banks with his family! No matter how Joe felt you could always find him cheering for his kids and grandkids at all their sporting events, never liking to miss one!! Anyone that knew Joe knew, although his look was a stern one, and his granddaughter always said: "Grandpa you're a man of few words" he adored his family and would do anything for them.
Joe will be looking down on his wife as she watches the Browns this year cheering them on with her in spirit and his family on all the special occasions making sure his family is taken care of and safe just as he did here on earth. He was the protector and provider, and he did that so exceptionally well. We all know he will be waiting for us when it's our turn to see him again in heaven!
We all miss his: "Oh my God" with his slap to the forehead when we all were talking so loud and fast... and his knowledge of directions without the phone when we would be on vacations or how he would always grill out when we wanted it, to the simple things like how he would always have salt for our driveways, and the good window washer fluid for our cars so we could see even in the rain. It is the simple things that we miss the most because that is who Joe was someone that worked so hard to make sure his family was always taken care of and didn't go without and for that and so many other things he is so truly missed.
Joe, Dad, and Grandpa (Pa-Pa back in the day), we wish we could have said I love you one more time before you left, or to tell you how much you meant to each of us. Michele will always be your "Shell", Joe your "Jo-Jo", Blake your "Scrub Bucket/Right Hand Man" and Brenna your "Chicken Legs"!! Not a day will go by that you will be forgotten or any of the stuff you taught us: always be there for each other and family always comes first!!! We love you.
