Obituary of Joseph A. Petito
Joseph A. Petito beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, 98, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on July 12, 2022, at the Pines of Poughkeepsie. Born in Poughkeepsie on April 17, 1924, he was the son of the late Antonio and Gaetana Sampere Petito. Joseph was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and also attended the Culinary Institute of America. A lifelong resident, Joseph was the owner of Petito's Restaurant and the Linden Tavern. He was a cook for Central Hudson and also a manager for Kem Cards.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 38th amphibious engineers regiment during the D-Day Landing off the coast of Normandy, France. The invasion came to be known as "The Longest Day". He was part of Poughkeepsie's first group of 18 year olds to leave for war.
On February 16, 1946 Joseph married Corradina Scardaci at Mt. Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie. They were married for 69 years until she predeceased him on December 19, 2015. Family was central to their life together. They loved to cook and entertain family and friends.
Joseph was a lifetime member of the Italian Center, as well as the Poughkeepsie Elks Club #275. He attended Holy Trinity Church. He loved to read, do crossword puzzles and was an avid sports fan, especially the Giants and Yankees. Joseph is survived by his children: son Bruce Petito, and his wife Suzanne of Poughkeepsie, NY, daughter Joanne McCarron and her husband Dr. Robert McCarron, of Holden, MA and daughter Carol McKeown, of Geneseo, NY. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Joseph Petito, Kate McCarron, Nora Murphy, Rebecca McKeown and Chelsea Rybkin as well as his great-grandchildren: Kira Petito, Josephine and Sylvia Gugger, Madelyn and Emilie Murphy. He is also survived by his sister Grace Schab and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Joseph was predeceased by his siblings Rose Torsone, Cecilia Ray and Rudy Petito.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday August 11, 2022 from 5pm to 7pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday August 12, 2022, 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff on the third floor at the Pines of Poughkeepsie for their compassionate and skilled care of Joseph.
