Joe was a proud alumnus of Luther Burbank High School, where he served as drum major and graduated in 1968. His commitment to ministry led him to the Latin American Bible Institute, where he earned a degree in Ministerial Leadership in 1972. He furthered his education at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, obtaining a B.A. in Ministerial Education in 1979. His love of learning was a hallmark of his character, and he instilled that passion in others throughout his life.
For over five decades, Rev. Plata dedicated himself to pastoral service within the Assemblies of God, nurturing and guiding countless souls in Texas, New Mexico, and California. His ministry extended beyond the pulpit as he took on roles as a community and spiritual leader in the Rio Grande Valley for over 15 years. Joe's interests were as diverse as they were profound. A passionate student of foreign languages and theater arts, he found joy in dramas, passion plays, and the resonance of the orchestra. His musical talents were evident in his skillful play of the trombone and trumpet. An astute reader, Joe consumed more than 500 books throughout his lifetime, each one adding to the depth of his knowledge and the breadth of his understanding.
Above all, Rev. Plata was a man defined by love, kindness, and intelligence. He cherished moments spent with his family, whether in the simple daily routine or in travels with his wife. His presence was a source of comfort and wisdom, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who were blessed to know him
