Joseph Michael Reid, 74, passed away on October 9, 2024, at his home in Haddon Township, NJ. He leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Sandra (nee Hartman); daughters, Kimberly Lauren Reid (Brad Webb) and Jamie Lynn Elizabeth Reid (Matthew Froonjian); brother, Patrick Joseph Reid (Patricia Ann [nee McManus]); sister-in-law Judy Hartman (Mike DeKay); nieces and nephews, Melissa (Todd) Harra, Colleen (Steve) Degnan, Timothy Reid, McKenzie Hartman, and Addison Hartman; as well as many other extended family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Francis Reid and Mary Gertrude (nee Duffy); his brother, James "Tim" Reid, and in-laws Neil & Marian (nee Weinberger) Hartman.
Joe grew up in Springfield, Delaware County, PA, attended Saint Francis of Assisi church and elementary school and graduated from Springfield High School. He loved playing basketball, eating hamburgers at Charlies, and hanging out with his friends and childhood dog, Cassius Reid. He later graduated from St. Joseph's University with both a management marketing and an accounting degree. He worked at the Franklin Mint, Deloitte accounting firm, Franklin Computers, and later for Warminster Township in the accounting department. He continued playing basketball into adulthood in various men's leagues, enjoyed camping with his family at Outdoor World, riding roller coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure, and going swimming down the Jersey shore.
In 1993, while working on attaining his CPA, he suffered a grand mal seizure at work and his journey of living with a brain injury began. For the next 31.5 years, he (and his family) became very familiar with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania system, countless rehabilitation facilities, and the world of home healthcare as they navigated the many ups and downs of new diagnoses, mobility challenges, and varying stages of independence. Throughout these years, he continued to keep a positive spirit, living "one day at time", and was known by those he met as a cheerful, easy going, kind, and caring man. He still loved shooting hoops in the driveway (usually outscoring his opponents), swimming at the gym and the Crystal Lake pool, listening to his "oldies" music, cheering on his Philadelphia sports teams, and enjoying time with family and friends. His doctors often referred to him as "a trooper", but to his friends and family he was just Joe, Joey, Willis, Egghead, Uncle Joe, and Dad. He is greatly missed.
Visitation will begin at 9am, with a funeral service following at 10am, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Lewis Funeral Home, 78 E. Main St., Moorestown, NJ. Interment at 12:30 pm at S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westmont Fire Company No. 1: EMS volunteers 120 Haddon Avenue Westmont, NJ 08108 (https://bit.ly/WestmontEMS) or to a charity of your choice.
