In Loving Memory of Joseph Richard Simpson January 25, 1949-March 4, 2025
It is with deep sadness and profound gratitude that we announce the passing of Joseph Richard Simpson, fondly known as Richard, who left this world on March 4, 2025, at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 25, 1949, Richard was a man of many passions, a kind soul, and an adventurer at heart. His life was a testament to curiosity, compassion, and a love for both the simple and the extraordinary moments.
Richard found joy in the simple things in life-whether it was in the pages of a good book, the peace of a garden he lovingly tended, or the thrill of a fishing line cast into the water. His love for nature extended beyond his garden and into the hunt for fossils, where he often uncovered pieces of the past that fueled his endless fascination with the world's history. He had a true adventurer's spirit, rock climbing in New York, visits to family and friends in Mystic, Connecticut, with a fondness for The Seaport, as well as his travels to Mexico, Jamaica, and the coast of South America during his younger years. These journeys filled his heart with stories he loved to share. Richard also enjoyed dabbling in painting and sketching over the years. His late in life hobbies included casino and trips to Las Vegas with "the boys".
Richard dedicated much of his professional life to helping others. For many years, he worked at the Selinsgrove Center in vocational and recreational therapy, where he made a difference in the lives of countless individuals. Upon his retirement, he continued his meaningful work as an MHMR counselor with the CSIU, always driven by his deep sense of purpose and care for others.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Jessica Rae Murphy (Jason) of Sunbury, PA: stepson Eric Brennar (Jodie) of Florida; his granddaughter, Hadyn Dixon (Deion Cupp) and great-grandson, Ridley Cupp, of Sunbury, PA; grandson, Logan Murphy and great-grandsons, Charlie and Finley Murphy, grandsons Lliam Murphy and Ronan Murphy, also of Sunbury, PA, step-granddaughter, Katie Adkinson and step-grandson, Peter Panzeri. He is also survived by his brother, Franklin R. Simpson (Lori) of Sunbury, PA; niece, Kara L. Greene (Matthew) and great-nephews Callan and Nolan Greene, of Sunbury, PA; nephew, Kile L. Simpson (Jayme Ritchie) of Springfield, VA; his ex-wife Bonnie Renkel of Clarksdale, Mississippi and his life-long friends George, Bouy, Sprenkle, Jamur and Jack with whom he remained close
Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia Mae (Roush) Simpson, and his father, Joseph Richard Simpson.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the compassionate hospice team whose support and care provided Richard with comfort and peace during his final days. Their kindness and dedication will forever be remembered.
A memorial service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at the convenience of the family.
May Richard rest in peace, surrounded by the beauty of the earth he cherished, the adventures he sought, and the love of his family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
