He was born on March 19, 1937, in Anita, PA to the late Alexander Smelko and Mary (LaBance) Smelko.
Joseph graduated from Saint Cosmos in Punxsutawney, PA in 1956.
He was formerly employed at Erie County Cable TV as a plant manager and lineman.
Joseph served in the US Army Signal Corps during peace time.
He was a member of St. Gregory Thaumaturgus Church. Joseph loved to golf, hunt, fish, and travel. Above all, he was a "role model" to all his family.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 61 years Sally Diane (Sprague) Smelko; daughter, Tina Brown (Thomas) of North East; brothers, Robert Smelko and Larry Smelko; sister, Delores Smelko; grandchildren, Shannon Chrispen (Adam), Leann Brown (Kale Asp), Thomas J. Brown (Samantha); great grandchildren; Emery, Riley, Aggie and Elsie.
Private Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, PA 16428. Private funeral will be held at a later date.
