Joseph Clifton Smith, 75, of Plantersville, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 5, 2024 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center.
Joe was born in Selma on August 2, 1948 to the late Arthur C. Smith and the late Betty Ballow Smith.
Joe grew up in Selma. After marrying his wife, Diane, they made their home in Plantersville. Joe spent much of his career with Bush Hog in Selma, where he worked for more than 30 years. He retired as Plant Manager of the Selfield facility.
Joe loved golfing and went on many outings with family and friends. He was very good at building things. He and his son, Scott, worked on many projects together.
Joe’s love for his grandchildren was very evident to everyone. He spent much of his time doing things with them and no one could make them laugh more than “Mamps.”
He loved telling them funny stories about himself. Joe is going to be missed by so many.
He is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Diane Smitherman Smith; son, Scott Smith (Karen); grandchildren, Brilee and Braxton Smith; brothers, Johnny Smith (Leigh Ann) and Barry Stephens (Lynn); sister, Jean Portera (Bob); brothers-in-law, Smitty Smitherman (Anna) and Steve Smitherman (Sybil); mother-in-law, Bettye Smitherman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Betty Smith; and father-in-law, Wendell Smitherman.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Plantersville Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry “Tater” Harrison, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe’s nephews: Kyser Smith, Ross Smitherman, Tristan Smitherman, Ryan Bergeron, McCain Bergeron, Caden Neighbors, Conner Stephens, and Richard Ellis.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Roberts, Steven Neighbors, Logan Little, and Cody Swindal.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
