Joseph Alan Thuma

Joseph Alan Thuma, of Wilton Manors, died on March 3 at Holy Cross Hospital after a brief illness. He was 63.
Known to his friends as "Jojo," he was born in Fort Lauderdale to Wilton Manors pioneers Anthony and Madgeline Thuma.
Jojo attended St. Clement School, Wilton Manors Elementary and Sunrise Middle School, and graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1979. After graduation, he went into the marine services industry.
His paternal grandfather introduced him to fishing and crabbing when he was just out of diapers and hunting, fishing, crabbing and surfing remained his lifelong passions. His fishing exploits took him from Anglin's Pier in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to New York, to trout streams in the Carolinas, lakes in Central Florida and deepwater fishing the Bahamas, Caribbean, Europe and Central America.
Hunting was another of his passions, especially for deer, feral hogs and waterfowl. When he had the time, he'd escape to Polk County to hunt. Surfing took him to Costa Rica and Barbados. He enjoyed crabbing with his grandfather until the waterways in Broward County became too polluted.
Just as his grandfather had taught him to fish and regaled him with stories of his deer-hunting exploits on Long Island, N.Y., Jojo taught his nephew and the children of his friends how to fish and shoot and drive the swamp buggy at his camp.
Jojo is survived by his sister, Cynthia Thuma, brother-in-law Jim Young and nephew Nick Young.
Burial will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale. A memorial get-together for his friends is being planned for late spring.
