MAMOU – Funeral services for Joseph Ronald “Rubber Boots” West will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Mamou. Burial will follow in the West Cemetery in Chataignier with Pastor David Plunkett officiating services.
Ronald West passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023 at the Southwest Louisiana War Veteran’s Home in Jennings at the age of 87. He was born to a share cropping family on Saturday, February 1, 1936, in Chataignier and was welcomed by his loving parents, Gustave and Christiana Geitz West.
Ronald was a remarkable man who dedicated his life to his profession as a tugboat captain for over 40 years. Throughout his career, Ronald navigated the mighty waters with skill and expertise. He spent countless hours on the waterways, guiding vessels to their destinations safely. His dedication and commitment to his craft earned him the respect of colleagues and earned him a reputation as one of the finest tugboat captains of his time.
Ronald's family and friends remember him fondly by his beloved nickname "Rubber Boots," a testament to his adventurous spirit and robust personality. Ronald fearlessly faced any obstacle that came his way. And his unwavering determination and resilience were unmatched. Ronald proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. His time in the service instilled in him values of patriotism, discipline, and loyalty that he carried with him throughout his life.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ronald was an avid outdoorsman who found solace in nature. He had an insatiable passion for riding horses and camping, relishing every opportunity to immerse himself in the beauty of the great outdoors. These hobbies brought him immense joy and allowed him to appreciate the serenity found in nature.
Ronald leaves behind a devoted daughter, Sandra Dee Veillon and her husband, Darrel of Point Blue; a loving son, Derrick West and his wife, Rachel of Mamou; grandchildren, Dustin Veillon, Victoria Fontenot and husband, Kenny, Heather West and husband, Brian, and Billy West; and great-grandchildren, Cain, Cori Jade, Julien, Daxton, Kendyl, and Khloe. Their lives were brightened by his presence, and his enduring love will continue to nurture them in the years to come.
Ronald was predeceased by his father, Gustave West; mother, Christiana Geitz West; brothers, Harry Lee West, Evans West, and Lonis West.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man who lived life to the fullest, let us remember him with love and gratitude for the joy he brought into our lives. A visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Mamou on Sunday, November 5 from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM and will resume on Monday, November 6 beginning at 8:00 AM until time of service.
