Josephine P. Vera, a cherished matriarch and beacon of warmth in her community, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at the age of 99 (just one month shy of 100) in
Darien, IL. Born on October 24, 1925, in Chicago, IL, to Jose and Teresa Mancillas, Josephine's life was a remarkable journey of love, dedication, and service.
On August 2, 1947, Josephine married Henry J. Vera, and together they created a family legacy that would span generations. She was a devoted mother to Camille (the late Robert) Deluhery, the late Joanne Vera, the late Hank (Carol) Vera, and Nicolette (Stephen) Peterson. Her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was filled with the same immense love and guidance she provided her children, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of Kathryn Deluhery Hankamp (David), Craig, Scott, Audery Vera, Andrew (Margaret Anne) Pisanko, Chris (Kristin) and Justin (Heather) Peterson, and great-grandchildren Lauren Josephine and Lydia Jane Hankamp, Lincoln Grey, Harper Reese, and Charley Laine Peterson, and Bennett Gene and Clark Allen Peterson.
Josephine's siblings, Andrea and John Mancillas, and her sister-in-law Judith Vera, remember her fondly, as do numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry, her daughter, Joanne, her son, Hank Jr., her parents, and her siblings Jovita Tavares, Angeline Dadabo, Paul Mancillas, and in-laws Anna Velasco, Louis, Phillip, and Edward Vera.
Professionally, Josephine's career was a testament to her work ethic and leadership. Starting at Illinois Bell, which later became AT&T, she advanced from an operator to supervisory management, retiring after 30 years. Not one to rest, she embarked on a second career as the office manager for Hesik Pyrbilo Oak Park Law firm, where she dedicated another 20 years.
Josephine's involvement in the community was extensive, including her infamous role as a St. Sylvester school parent member, fundraiser, and craft contributor. Her culinary skills were legendary, especially her Easter lamb cake, which had a standing order year after year.
Josephine was also a vital member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American GI Forum, a Mexican American Veterans organization. During her husband's tenure as president of the local chapter, she served as President of the Auxiliary, hosting notable figures such as Robert F. Kennedy.
Known for her consummate problem-solving skills, Josephine could turn her hand to anything from household tips to sewing Halloween costumes and elegant dresses for special occasions. Her recipes and crafts were just a few examples of her creativity and talent.
Above all, Josephine was loving, kind, and selfless. These words best encapsulate a woman who dedicated her life to her family and community. Her legacy of love and commitment to others will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Josephine P. Vera will be deeply missed, and her memory will be treasured forever by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
