Bernard Keating Obituary
Bernard "Barney" Keating, a beacon of joy and laughter, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 91 in Downers Grove, IL. Born on January 1, 1934, in Davenport, IA, Barney's life was a testament to the power of positivity and the strength of the human spirit.
Barney was the beloved husband of the late Claire "Kay" Keating, and together they built a loving family, including their children Patrick (Pamela) Keating, Shawn (Bonnie) Keating, and Shannon (Dave) Morris. He was a cherished grandfather to Hannah (Colton) Koch, Maya (Brit) Brothen, the late Jenna Keating, Chase Keating (fiancé Jill Horvatin), Carolyn Keating, the late Michelle Keating, Rachel Keating, Kiley Mendrick, Kira Mendrick, and Amanda (Victor) Rodriguez. His joy further multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren Alba, Josuke, and Wiley Rodriguez, Maeve Koch, and Blair Brothen, with one more on the way. Barney was preceded in death by his siblings, Jeanne Keating, James Keating, Margaret Verbiscar, and Mary Ellen (Bill) Schmal, all of whom shared in the Keating legacy of kindness and generosity.
A true patriot, Barney served his country as a US Army Veteran before dedicating himself to the field of education. A proud alumnus of Mt. Carmel High School, he furthered his passion for learning at Loyola University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in education, and later at DePaul University, where he completed his Master's degree in school administration. Barney's commitment to nurturing young minds was evident during his 20 years as the esteemed school principal of Shabbona Junior High in Morris, IL.
Barney's zest for life extended beyond his professional achievements. He was an avid golfer who cherished the camaraderie of the game with his childhood friends. Fishing trips with his sons were treasured moments, as were the travels across the United States with his wife, Kay. Their most frequent adventures included visits to Walt Disney World and various casinos, where they embraced the thrill of the game and the joy of each other's company.
After the loss of his beloved wife, Barney's daughter became his steadfast gambling partner, and together they frequented the casinos of Iowa, Rock Island, and the local favorites near home like Hollywood Casino in Aurora and Joliet. His love for sports was all-encompassing, as he enjoyed watching football, baseball, hockey, and golf on television. The local gym and Panera were more than just places for Barney to stay active and enjoy a meal; they were venues for him to engage with friends and share his infectious laughter.
Barney was well-known for his warm charisma and friendly nature. His faith-filled and selfless approach to life inspired all who knew him. He loved making people laugh, but his greatest love was for his family, whom he supported and cherished in every possible way.
The world has lost a man who was truly larger than life. Barney's absence will be profoundly felt by everyone fortunate enough to have called him a friend. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community will continue to resonate for generations to come. Bernard "Barney" Keating will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
In honor of Barney's remarkable life, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 8404 S. Cass Ave., Darien.
