JOY MARSHALL MIDDLETON Age 76 of Antioch and Murfreesboro, she was preceded in death by husband, Wayne Middleton; and parents, Elmer and Christine Marshall.
She always voiced gratitude for a marriage of love and laughter and for the blessings of a childhood in "Chris and Elmer's" home, which they opened to all with optimism and kindness. Graduate of Antioch High School and Belmont University, with a Master's degree and additional accreditations from Middle Tennessee State University. A veteran educator in Metropolitan-Nashville Public School, mostly at Antioch High School, she presented local, state and national workshops in teaching the Language Arts. During her career, she received the Tennessee Council Teachers of English state award and a U.S. Department of Education commendation for classroom instruction. A descendant of Robert Cartwright, one of the April 1780 founders of Nashville, she shared her talents with local organizations in the cause of historic preservation. With her mother, Joy authored a book on families and the story of their Antioch community, a nominee for the Tennessee History Book Award at its publication. In her new life in Murfreesboro, she continued to enjoy and support Rutherford County's rich local history. A lifelong Anglophile, her heaven-on-earth was in traveling through the villages and British back roads during her frequent visits to the Isles. She was surrounded all her life by the best of friends and an extensive, loving family whose children and grandchildren became the joy of her later years.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road by Randall Hatcher. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 615-331-1952.

Joy was my first cousin. We shared a love of teaching, genealogy and traveling. I remember spending time watching the eclipse at Lebanon State Park. Also that same week we went to many cemeteries looking at graves of our ancestors on the Blanton side. She was a sweet and caring person and will be missed by all.

Class of 1969. My favorite teacher and loved working with her on the our class annual. I think she was so young at that time we were so comfortable with her, she was as much a friend as teacher. Prayers and hugs for all the family.

Joy was a truly wonderful teacher and an inspiration. I will never forget the beautiful letter of recommendation she wrote for me for college. It was so eloquent and thoughtful...just like her.

Joy was an exceptional & inspiring teacher as well as a "home grown" hero, being a member of one of the founding families of Antioch, the granddaughter of Mrs. Grace Cole, for whom Cole Elementary School is named, & an Antioch historian. She introduced me, a most parochial teenager, to worldly thoughts & possibilities. I shall remember her standing in the front of the classroom reading a Shakespeare quote..."We are such stuff as dreams are made on..."

Mrs. Middleton was a beloved teacher and friend. She was able to attend our class reunion in 2017 and enjoyed seeing some of her Antioch students again. Later I had the chance to sit and talk with her about her many trips to England in which she recalled so many wonderful details from those experiences. We will greatly miss her.
