Joy Slaughter (née Sims) of Boonton, NJ went home to our Lord on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, after a brief illness.

One of two daughters of Jay and Margaret (née Douglas) Sims, Joy was a lifelong resident of Boonton, following her birth in June of 1961. She graduated from Boonton High School in 1979 and was known for her love of sports. She lettered in softball and basketball, scoring over 900 points in basketball. Joy married her other half, Mitchell "Mitch" Slaughter, Jr. The two settled in Boonton, where they assumed their prized journey of raising three sons. They recently celebrated 38 years in a legendary union of love and friendship.

Joy delighted in applauding her sons as they played football, karate, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse. She was a phenomenal cook, constantly marveling her family with a thoughtful selection of meals. She had an easy-going personality, bearing an indelible aura of warmth and tranquility. She was a staunch believer in the value of hard work, often reminding others to prioritize resilience over resignation. A model of excellence herself, Joy charted perfect attendance throughout her school career. Notably, Joy was inspired by her mom, Margaret, who achieved the same perfect attendance record. Joy beamed with unmistakable pride when two of her sons achieved this same feat.

True to her name, Joy personified joy. She was an endless source of radiance and optimism to those she encountered.

Joy worked diligently at Dun & Bradstreet for 31 years. She completed the last 6 years of her esteemed career at Siemens, where she served as a senior service coordinator. When she was not bonding with her cherished family, Joy reveled in clothes shopping. Her particular soft spot was for shoes. She had quite the collection and a knack for styling them into tasteful outfits. Joy was also a devoted member of Bethel AME Church of Boonton.

Predeceased by her dear parents and her treasured son, Mitchell "Tripp" Slaughter, III; Joy is survived by her beloved husband, Mitch; her cherished sons, Jay "Tiger" Slaughter and Nicholas "Rock" Slaughter; her loving sister, Regina Hill; her adoring nephews and nieces, Reginald Hill, Jr., Ryne Hill, Pandora Harris and Devin Harris Butler; many other amazing family members, friends, and neighbors.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24th from 9:00 - 11:00am in Mount Zion Baptist Church in Boonton Township. The service will then follow at 11:00am. Joy will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Boonton, following church.
