Joyce L. Camel, 97 of Lincoln, IL passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025 at TimberCreek Village Assisted Living in Lincoln, IL.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Joyce was born on April 7, 1927, the daughter of John O. & Jessie D. Baker in Lincoln, IL.
Joyce graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1945, where her uncle William C. Handlin was the principal. She always said she was teased about preferential treatment due to the fact that her uncle was the principal. Handlin Field was named after her Uncle William.
She was married to Marvin "Dish" Camel on June 4, 1950. They were the parents of Cheri Camel Esayian and Dana Camel. Joyce and Dish were born in Lincoln and lived their entire lives in Lincoln. Dish preceded Joyce in death on April 28, 1993.
Joyce started her work career at McGrath Sand and Gravel in 1945 and worked there for 13 years. She then took several years off to be a Mom. After her children were older she worked in the admitting/registration office at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital for over 35 years. After retiring she continued to volunteer for several years at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Joyce loved to sew, knit, read, do jigsaw puzzles and cook. She was a wonderful seamstress and a great cook. She was a member of the Lincoln Christian Church. Joyce was a very kind and thoughtful person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Her one great love was her family. She loved caring for them and was always so proud of her children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John O & Jessie D Baker, husband,Marvin"Dish" Camel, son, Dana Camel, daughter-in-law, JeanAnn Camel and brother, Merritt H Baker.
Survivors are her daughter, Cheri Camel Esayian, several nieces and nephews and many friends. She will be missed.
Joyce had a love for all animals and especially her beloved dog, Greta of 21 years. Donations in Joyce's memory can be made to the Humane Society of Logan County.
