Joyce Comstock Obituary

Joyce Comstock

Evansville - Joyce Marie Kelley Comstock, of Frisco, Texas, passed away May 1, 2021, at her home, a week after celebrating her 93rd birthday.

She was born on April 24, 1928, in Evansville, Indiana to William and Dorothy Kelley. Her brother, James Kelley, preceded her in death. She graduated from Central High School in Evansville and from The University of Evansville before becoming a wife, mother, and a teacher. She married Charles Milton Comstock of Evansville, who preceded her in death in 1990.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Thomas Comstock of Atlanta, Georgia, and Marsha Cawthon and her husband, Tom, of Frisco, Texas. She has grandchildren, Allison Elliott, Matthew Cawthon, and his wife Chrissi, all of Frisco, Texas. She also has four great-grandchildren, Jackson Elliott, Avery Kate Elliott, Lilly Cawthon, and Charles Mitt Cawthon.

She began teaching in Evansville and continued her career in New Jersey, Georgia, and Texas.

She taught everything from first grade to special education. She retired from Frisco Independent School District where she enjoyed a special bond with her students, many of whom still visited her throughout the years. In 2012, she was honored with a school named for her, Joyce Kelley Comstock Elementary in Frisco, Texas. The school that bears her name is a testament to her dedication to students throughout her career. Until a few years ago, she was still teaching English as a Second Language to adult students in the evenings in Frisco.

She was an active member of Stonebriar Church in Frisco where she was a part of the Marathon Sunday School Class and the WOW group and served on multiple committees. She hosted dinners at her home and especially looked forward to hosting the St. Patrick's Day Celebration. While ill, she received as many as 25 cards a week from her church family, which we read and shared with her. She also celebrated every holiday with specific holiday outfits and jewelry. She had many friends all over the country and enjoyed lengthy telephone conversations with them.

In Evansville, she will have a Graveside Service at Park Lawn Cemetery, where she will be buried by her husband, Mitt, at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 7, 2021. There will be a reception at the home of Steve and Ann Fraser in Newburgh following the service. She will also have a celebration of her life at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco at 4 p.m., May 13, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, our mother requested donations be made to the Evansville Rescue Mission at 500 East Walnut Street, Evansville, IN 47713.

Arrangements are being handled by BOONE FUNERAL HOME EAST CHAPEL - A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, IN.
