Joyce Marie Ewert, age 81, of Mason, passed away Monday, December 30, 2024 in Mason. She was born July 28, 1943 in San Antonio, TX to Ernest W. Lieck and Helen (Jonas) Lieck. Joyce was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes. She married Fred "Freddy" Ewert on July 22, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes. Joyce grew up in the San Antonio area enjoying the comfort and company of family and friends. She graduated in 1960 from Northside High School and went to work in downtown San Antonio. It was at her job that she saw President Kennedy and his wife pass through downtown San Antonio in their motorcade the day before the president's trip to Dallas. She also "barely missed" meeting John Wayne, which was her all-time favorite actor. A year later she would marry Freddy and become a ranch wife.
Joyce's 52-year journey with Freddy started in Medina County where she enjoyed raising her children, teaching Sunday School at Zion Lutheran, dances at Quihi Dance hall, and bunco with her friends. They would eventually move to Ft. McKavett, TX where they spent their time ranching, making friends in the Menard community and welcoming their first grandchildren. From there, Joyce and Freddy would continue their ranching career in the Roswell, New Mexico area where they took pleasure in hosting their grandchildren and showing them the sights in the Roswell and Ruidoso area. Following their retirement from ranching, Joyce and Freddy moved to the Brady area where they enjoyed keeping up with their grandchildren.
After Freddy's passing in 2013, and looking for something to do, Joyce became a Pizza Hut delivery driver and delighted in getting to know a whole new group of friends that she took pleasure in playing cards and visiting with. Following her retirement from the workforce, Joyce would move to Mason. As sociable as always, Joyce made an entirely new group of friends that she enjoyed spending time with. In 1994, Joyce's life changed forever when her first grandchildren were born and she became Nana. Nana loved her "Little Sweethearts", all grown up now, more than life itself. She treasured all the memories made with them at their ranch in New Mexico and their home in Brady.
Joyce is survived by son Rex Ewert and wife Cathy of Brady; daughter Dawn Wenzel and husband George of Sisterdale; grandchildren (her Sweethearts) Emily Filer and husband Travis, Suzanna Ewert, Dolph Wenzel and wife Regan, Carl Ewert and wife Kate, Charles Wenzel, and Kate Wenzel; great-grandsons Conrad and Ellis Filer, and soon-to-be great-grandchild Wenzel; brother Roy Lieck; brother-in-law Harry Zenner; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years Freddy in 2013, her parents, and Jonas and Lieck grandparents.
Graveside services for Joyce Marie Ewert will be at 11:00 am Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Helotes with the Rev. Dr. Tim Rosenthal of Grace Lutheran in Menard officiating. Friends may sign the online memorial guestbook at www.leatherwoodmemorialchapels.com. Pallbearers will be Travis Filer, Dolph Wenzel, Carl Ewert, and Charles Wenzel. Honorary Pallbearers will be Larry Justice and Frank Condel. Memorial contributions in memory of Joyce Marie Ewert may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 104 Magnolia, Mason, TX 76856 and/or Zion Lutheran Church, 9944 Leslie Road, San Antonio, TX 78254.

So sorry for your loss.
God Bless you and your family.
My family and Joyce family did a lot together when we were growing up. I will remember her sweet smile and laugh but as a little girl l loved those beautiful Shirley Temple curls. Her mother always had her looking beautiful.
I don´t believe she never met a stranger
She will be missed but what beautiful memories you will always remember.
May the Lord give you comfort as your
hearts heal.
Give Roy Henry my condolences.
A sister in Christ.
Mata Nell(Ott) Orth.

I met her at silver leaf Mason. She always talked about missing her husband Freddy . She was a good cook and loved John Wayne and country music. Deepest sympathy to her family.
