Joyce Fought, a trailblazer, devoted mother, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of 104. A true force of nature, Joyce's life spanned a century of American history, defined by remarkable professional achievement, a spirit of adventure, and profound dedication to her family.
Born May 14, 1921, in West Monroe, Louisiana, Joyce dedicated her life to serving others and chasing opportunity. She was known by all for her selfless spirit and her unwavering willingness to help out no matter the circumstance. She cherished her family more than anything, and her love was the foundation of the home. Joyce also possessed an immense love for travel, enjoying many trips out West and always relishing the excitement of her trips to Las Vegas.
Joyce was a woman who didn't just witness history, she was a part of it. During World War II, she served as a Secretary for the Secretary of the Navy in Washington, D.C. At the same time, she became a popular pin-up girl for the servicemen, helping boost morale for those fighting overseas. She was also dedicated to education, graduating from Louisiana State University (LSU) and later taking classes at The Ohio State University (OSU) after moving to Columbus.
Joyce was a true pioneer in business. She successfully owned and operated the Short Stop convenience stores around Central Ohio as part of the Metro Enterprises Corporation. Short Stop, the main location at the corner of Lane Avenue and High Street, became a beloved fixture for Ohio State students.
She was recognized as one of the Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs in the 1960s and 70s.
Demonstrating her commitment to women's independence, she was proudly one of the first women in the country to have a credit card issued solely in her own name.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Chuck, daughter Rose, and her son-in-law Jack. Joyce's immense legacy is carried on by her loving children: Ed (Reesea) and Kelly (Frank). She leaves behind seven devoted grandchildren: Cody (Ann), Charlie (Brooke), Jessica (Tony), Nicholas (Hilary), Matthew (Lindsey), Sarah, and Kristy. She was also a proud great-grandmother to 11 great-grandchildren.
Her final wish was to be returned to her roots and be laid to rest in the family plot in Louisiana.
