Joyce Ann (nee Steinberger) Kater, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on January 31, 2025, in St. Petersburg at the age of 95. Joyce was born on October 8, 1929, in Springfield, Ohio to Chester and Jeannette (nee Budd) Steinberger. She graduated from Olive Branch High School in New Carlisle, Ohio in 1947, and then attended Wittenberg College for a year before transferring to Ohio State University, where she graduated with a BA in Speech in 1951. Joyce married Guilford C. "Dan" Kater on August 7, 1952. She followed him to Kansas, where they had their first child G. Christopher Kater, later they moved to Cincinnati where they added David C. Kater to their family. Joyce was an amazing woman who enjoyed the arts. At various time, she did it all, from producing, directing, writing, to acting in plays. In 1981, she was awarded the coveted Spelvin Award at the Greenville Community Theater. Wherever Joyce lived, whether it was in Manhattan, Kansas,
Harrison, Ohio,
Cincinnati, Ohio, Chicago, Scarsdale, NY or St. Petersburg, Florida, she was always involved in her community. Joyce always supported her husband in his long career in the sponsored film business. Joyce helped Dan when he started his own business. In Harrison, she was active at St. John United Church of Christ and the DAR Othniel Looker Chapter. Being 95, she touched many people over her long life and will be dearly missed.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Guilford C. "Dan" Kater; parents: Chester and Jeannette Steinberger, and sister: Constance Bair.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving sons: Christopher (Shelley) Kater and David (Laura Leyden) Kater; cherished grandchildren: Geoffrey (Karen), Thomas (Nicole), Kelley (Tim) Via, Timothy, Jennifer and Hannah Kater, and Damon Begeman; beloved great grandchildren: Alexander and Emily Gover, Lucian and Gabriel Henderson, Devon and Avalon Begeman, Brooklyn & Charlotte Via and John Christopher Kater.
Visitation will be held at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S Vine St, Harrison, on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 10am until the time of the funeral service at 12 pm. Burial to follow at Glen Haven Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Helen Kater Scholarship Fund at St. Johns Church at Broadway & Sycamore, Gov Othniel Looker Chapter D.A.R, or St Jude Children's Hospital.
