Joyce Mankin Obituary
She was born in New Orleans on September 18, 1939, but grew up in Tucson, AZ and graduated from Tucson High School in 1957. She married Jack L. Mankin, a 1953 graduate of Jefferson City, while in the Air Force at Davis Monthan on February 23, 1957.
Joyce and Jack both worked at Oscar's Steak House before opening Earl's Drive-In. In 1972, they opened the doors of J Bar J serving some of the best bar-b-que in the area. Joyce worked at various businesses, restaurants, and later owned/operated a religious store dedicated to Angels and Christmas. She always fulfilled the guardian role by putting others before herself.
Joyce loved to be out in their gardens. Whether in Missouri, Oregon, or Southern California, you could find her planting, tending, harvesting, or canning the vegetables they grew. No weather was too difficult for this duo to grow a great tomato! She created memorable scrapbooks of her boys' lives in sports, possessing the ability to share a picture and tell the story. Joyce also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: her three sons (and their spouses), Michael Mankin (Suzie) of Lohman, MO, Darren Mankin (Nancy) of Sherwood, OR, and Brian Mankin (Kris) of Menifee, CA; her adoring grandchildren, David Mankin, Lindsey Dawson, Carrie Gooderham, Chase Mankin, and Cameryn Mankin; and her five great-grandchildren, Declan, Ainsley, Fianna, Callie and Chloe.
Joyce was preceded in death by: her husband, Jack Mankin on September 21, 2021; her mother and step-father, Marian E. and Jay S. Wymer; and her sisters, Ethel Fregoso and Judith Wymer.
She will rest alongside Jack at Riverside National Military Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92518, for eternity.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Special Olympics, Missouri or Community Christian Church of Jefferson City which has been her place of worship since moving back to Missouri.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
