RICHMOND, Ind. – Joyce A. Melling, age 89, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Reid Health.
Born July 24, 1934, in Richmond, Indiana, to Charles Pete and Wavaline McKinley, Joyce was a life-long resident of Richmond. She loved volunteering at Reid Health, where she made many friends.
She and her husband, Roy Melling, were owners of Melling Electric Inc., which opened in 1964 and operated locally for 50 years (until 2014).
Joyce was a past president of the Richmond, Altrusa Club, past president of the Latis Shrine Guild, and a member of the Tarum Shrine Ladies. She was awarded "Female Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce in both 1994 and 1997.
During her time as a Reid volunteer, which she did from 2004 until her death, Joyce accrued over 3,000 hours and received "Volunteer of the Month" recognition. She maintained that her service at Reid "was such a blessing" because "she got back more than what she gave."
Joyce and her husband spent many winters in Matlacha, Florida, with her family. They also traveled extensively, and she loved to reminisce about these trips.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet (Lee) Higgs; son, Ron (Debbie) Melling; six grandchildren, Ron (Jamie) Melling Jr., Christopher (Angelic) Melling, Abigail (Lida) Higgs, Zachary (Stella) Higgs, Stefanie (Jenny) Siehl, and Katherine (Matt) Cummins; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Melling; brother, David McKinley; and her parents.
Private funeral service for Joyce A. Melling will be at Earlham Memorial Mausoleum with entombment to follow. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Help the Animals, Inc., P.O. Box 117, Richmond, IN 47375 or Reid Foundation, 1100 Reid Parkway, Richmond, IN 47374.
