Joyce Meyer Obituary

Funeral services for Joyce A. Meyer, age 83, of Omaha, formerly of Norfolk, will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue in Norfolk. Reverend Gordon Braun will officiate, with interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk.
The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
She passed away Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Ovation Heartwood Preserve Retirement Home in Omaha.
Memorials are suggested to Norfolk VFW or the Norfolk High School Athletic Booster Club.
Joyce Ann Meyer was born June 17, 1942, to Roy and Ethel Bindrum in Falls City, NE. The family later moved to Lincoln where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. She was the third of five girls to graduate from Lincoln High.
Joyce had fond memories of life in Falls City but living in Lincoln brought many new adventures. Living close to Memorial Stadium and the U.N.L campus, the family spent many Saturdays cheering on their beloved Huskers.
She met Bill Meyer in Lincoln as they shared many common interests. Joyce was looking for a guy that would be a great dad as she experienced this growing up. She found exactly what she was looking for in Bill. Bill spent a short stint in the military, and they married shortly after Joyce graduated from high school.
On March 25, 1961, Joyce married William "Bill" Grant Meyer at the First Baptist Church in Lincoln. Three children were born to this marriage. Mike, Dave, and Kathy. Joyce was a proud mother, wife and grandmother. Bill and Joyce could always be heard at Norfolk High School activities or any event their children or grandchildren were participating in.
Joyce enjoyed playing cards (and winning), playing cribbage, board games, and watching game shows. She was an avid Husker fan, a wonderful cook, and had a talent for sewing as she sewed many of her children's first clothes. She and Bill loved to travel and were able to visit all 48 lower U.S. States and enjoyed spending the winter months in the warmth of the Florida sun.
Joyce worked a number of jobs throughout her career. She was a loyal employee but in 1982 decided to bet on herself and her ability to start a business. She, along with the help from her family, opened an athletic store in downtown Norfolk. With her hard work, determination, and sound business plan Joyce was able to outgrow The Athletes Foot downtown location and move to the Sunset Plaza in the Norfolk mall. There were several changes in the 28 years she played a part in the store, but some things never changed. Her dedication, keen eye for detail, and ability to navigate the challenges many small businesses face helped to drive the success of the store.
She was a member of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Norfolk Booster Club, and Kiwanis Club. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Mike (Joann) Meyer of Omaha, Dave (Carrie) Meyer of Omaha, and Kathy (Nick) Hostert of O'Neill; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Sherman of Lincoln, Linda Mendoza of Lincoln, and Jean (Alan) Piontek of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Jerry Coy; and nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William "Bill" (2006); sister, Brenda Coy; and brothers-in-law, Phil Mendoza and Bernie Sherman.
Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.homeforfuneralsinc.com.
