Joyce Bullington Paine died on Thursday, April 21, 2022 in Valdosta, Georgia. She was born on July 6, 1929 to Grady and Clara Bullington. Joyce embraced life with enthusiasm, hospitality and humor, all of which were influenced by her deep faith. Whether in her wide circle of close friends, numerous students from her Bible classes or the many others who found their way into her life, she was known to provide support, encouragement and either a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of her famous iced tea.
Joyce was an active, longstanding member of First Baptist Church in Valdosta where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She also taught Bible Classes from her home to many who began as students and then became friends. Joyce was also active in her community. She was a past president of the Valdosta Junior Service League, past board member of the South Georgia Regional Library and member of the Book Review Club. She was also active for years in a local tennis league. She was Valdosta's Woman of the Year in 1963.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence M. Paine Sr. and survived by her four children: C. Mathews Paine, Jr. (Nancy) of Moultrie, GA; Anne Paine West (Fowler) of Alexandria, VA; Joy Paine Snyder (Bill) of Columbia, SC; and Stephen Paine of New York, NY. She also is survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 2:30 pm at First Baptist Church, 200 West Central Avenue and the family will receive friends following the service at Park Place, 108 West Park Avenue, from 3:30pm until 5:00 pm. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Valdosta Junior Service League, Lowndes County Historical Society, First Baptist Church Food Ministry or your charity of choice.
