Joyce Parson Sargent passed away on December 5, 2022 at her home.
She was born August 17, 1948, to Lee Collin Parson and Esther Beatrice Hill Parson in Memphis, Tennessee. Both parents and her only sibling, Willie C Moore, preceded her in death, as well as her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Joyce professed Christ as her Savior at the age of 12 at Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Upon coming to Kansas City, Missouri she attended St. Stephen Baptist Church and after moving to Grandview, Missouri, Second Missionary Baptist Church. She remained a very active and faithful leader for 38 years. Throughout her decades of dedicated membership, she served in Pastoral Support, Urgent Care, Women's Ministry, and Church in the Home. Joyce also participated in Christian Education Empowerment and served on the SMBC Corporate Board.
Joyce always had a passion for learning. Her desire was to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, using her spiritual gifts of administration, planning, organizing and helping.
She attended Memphis public schools and received a four-year scholarship to Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, graduating magna cum laude. While at Lane, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and was also the chapter president. Later, she also served as the sixth president of the Kansas City Alumni Chapter as its youngest leader. After college, she accepted a job with the Social Security Administration (SSA) in Kansas City, Missouri, and her career spanned 36 years. Joyce worked in the program service center, regional office, central office, and the district office in project management, supervisory, and management positions.
In Kansas City, she met and married James Bernell Sargent, her husband of 44 years, to which two children were born, Irika Ashton Sargent and Brian James Sargent.
Upon retiring in 2007, she attended classes at Carver Theological Bible College and Institute every semester. She also volunteered with Child Evangelism Fellowship leading elementary students to Christ in an after-school program.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband, James, daughter, Irika (Dorian Orr) of Chicago, IL, and son, Brian (Divya Vasudevan) of North Haven, CT. She also leaves two stepchildren Michael James Sargent of Auburn, ME, and KaTonya Kindle of Morrilton, AR; three grandchildren, Miryam Neelam Vasudevan-Sargent, Aria Vivian Orr, and Jordan Robertson, and a granddog, Kingsley Alexander Sargent Orr; an uncle, Lee Minus Parson, (Joanie Parson) of Cleveland, OH, a niece, Brinetta Carlton (Al Carlton), a nephew, Eldridge Moore, Jr., three great-nieces, and many cousins, and friends.

I know this is so late but I just found out about the passing of Joyce. I want the family to know how sad I am to hear of your loss. I worked with Joyce at the Independence Mo SSA office. She was truly one of the nicest people I´ve met. She carried herself with so much class. She was beautiful both inside and out. I will keep your family in my prayers. Sincerely
Judy Davis
