Joyce P. (Walker) Schreder, 89, passed peacefully from this life into eternal life on July 12, 2024, at Arbor Place on the Meth-Wick campus in Cedar Rapids.
Joyce was born on April 6th, 1935 in Crystal, MN to Helen and Herb Walker. She attended Robbinsdale High School and graduated in 1953. Joyce attended the Minnesota School of Business in 1955 and soon after, married Roger A. Schreder on June 23, 1956 in Crystal, MN. She worked at Northern States Power until 1957 and then her life became all about her family.
Joyce and Roger were blessed with 5 children: Lori (Jeff) Smith of Oskaloosa, Lynn (Andrea Garland) of Granger, Joe (Jackie) of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Brian) Farmer of Cedar Rapids, Dan (Colleen) of Cosby, TN. Grandchildren: Tyler Smith, Whitney Schreder (John Feldman), Luke Schreder, Dylan (Chetie Daniels) Schreder, Riley Schreder, Samantha (Matthew) Messina, Mikinzie (Braden) Ridgewell, Brayden (Madeline Kelley) Farmer, Drew (Kenzie Baron) Schreder, Brooke (Hunter) Shelton. Great Grand-children: Kaylie, Sawyer, Harper, Ivy, Charlie, Elysian, Anthony, Timothy, Hudson.
Joyce was a homemaker for over 30 years and was a talented seamstress and cook, sewing clothes for her kids and always having fresh baked goodies waiting for them when they got home from school. She loved being involved with each school that her kids attended by serving as the PTA president at Coolidge, Hoover and Taft. She also served as president of the Charter Bus Route, implementing new bus service for Taft Junior High. Joyce became a Jefferson High School Booster and enjoyed supporting the athletic department. In 1987, she took on a leadership role in Project Graduation, introducing the concept of safe graduation celebrations where the kids were "locked in" the school for the night. Joyce was one of four on the team to introduce the concept to High Schools and secure financial support from civic groups throughout Cedar Rapids. Joyce was inducted into the Jefferson High School Booster Club Hall of Fame in 1999. She and Roger especially loved working in the concession stand and making popcorn for the football games.
Following her youngest child's high school graduation, she began a 10-year career with Skogman Realty from 1988-1998, working in the downtown Cedar Rapids and Marion offices. After retirement, Joyce volunteered for the Food Bank, Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospice. She was honored as Volunteer of the Year from Mercy Hospital. Once her time of volunteer service was over, she enjoyed staying home and began her ministry, crocheting hundreds of prayer shawls, donating them to Mercy Hospice and Meth-Wick and also giving many to family and friends.
Joyce was the ultimate teammate to Roger and together they provided unwavering guidance and support to their kids throughout their lives. They enjoyed traveling around this great country they loved, visiting many places and especially enjoyed "Yellowstone in the Winter", their last big trip.
Joyce is greeted in heaven by her loving husband Roger, her mother and father, her brother Ken, her mother and father-in-law Viola and Henry, her sister-in-law Jeri, her nephew Erick, and her great-grandson Elysian. Joyce is also survived by her sisters-in-law Diane, Ginny, and many nieces and nephew.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 9:00 am at St. Ludmila Parish in Cedar Rapids. A private family burial at St. Joseph's cemetery will be conducted following Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Meth-Wick Community in Joyce's memory.
