Joyce Ann (Lindebo) Strom crossed over to peace on June 27, 2025.
Her family carries her smiling, graceful, playful and kind spirit forward in their hearts through shared memories of her 85 years, 9 months and 21 days of joyful life.
Joyce was born into this world on September 6, 1939, an auspicious time in history. Her family lived on 213 N 78th St in Wauwatosa, and she attended Blain Elementary. She remembered some concerns of polio as a child; sometimes not being allowed to play with friends. They listened to the radio and their parents had a victory garden. In 1949 they moved to 2440 80th in West Allis, into the home that her father John built. At this time they added a TV to their home.
As a high school student, she spent a summer as an AFS student in Holland. Graduating from Nathan Hale High School on Lincoln Ave in 1957, she went on to UW Milwaukee majoring in Social Work. One of her first jobs was for an adoption agency.
She married Edward Strom on December 30, 1961 at Mount Hope Lutheran Church, her family's church. Joyce and Ed bought their home at 1309 S 94th St, West Allis, WI in 1963 and she lived there until May 2022, when she moved to assisted living.
In 1979-1981 Joyce lived in Djursholm, Sweden with Ed and her daughters, Chris and Heidi; while Ed worked for Allis Chalmers. She took up Näversöm, Swedish Shepherdess Needle Art, while living near Stockholm, adding to her sewing and quilting interests. Besides continued practice of her Lutheran faith which included singing in choir and creating banners for the rectory with her fellow parishioners, she also volunteered at Mount Hope in various ways including for senior book discussions.
When her daughters were grown she returned to her social work career with a Hospice organization until her retirement. Joyce was a member of the Mount Hope book group, a docent at the Milwaukee Art Museum, a long time member of the Sons of Norway, and a volunteer with Historic Milwaukee Inc. She and her husband nurtured their 'up north' property by planting trees and letting lupine grow for karner blue butterfly habitat. They enjoyed many trips exploring the United States and historic locations in WI.
She left her family these words in a letter when she traveled to Paris with friends in 1995 - "I thank God everyday for you, that He will be with you as you go on your way. I love you just as you are. Always remember that I'm with you and I love you. Today is a gift- enjoy, work hard and share. Love Joyce, Mom"
Joyce is lovingly survived by her daughters, Christina (John Dursi) and Heidi Strom (Paul Aprahamian); brother Harold Lindebo, his wife, Gail and sister Sonja Page; many nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime friend Darlene. She was preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents, John and Norma Lindebo, and her beloved Uncle Ernie Mueckler. Thank you to Azura (DL) Oconomowoc, her caring neighborhood which provided her a joyful home these last few years and to all the staff of St. Croix Hospice who with her family, provided her the support she needed at her end of life.
