Joyce Marie Thompson Torbert 82 years old, died on September 2, 2025, at Christus hospital in Tyler, Texas. She will be remembered for her strong faith In God and His son Jesus Christ and for her unwavering love for her family. She was born in Campbell County, Virginia, the daughter of Meree and Pauline Inge Thompson of Concord, Virginia.
She attended Concord High School and graduated from Rustburg High School. Joyce is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harry Randolph (Randy) Torbert of Point, TX and her four children, Vicki Boyd (Larry) of Plano, TX, Barry Torbert (Erin) of Kent, WA, Wendy Fitzgerald (Chris) of Maple Valley, WA & David Torbert (Amanda) of Crawford, TX. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Kelton Sears, Ben Boyd, James Mattick, Rebecca (Becky) Hebda, Lindsey Hickey, Brittany Glover, Ty Torbert & Luke Torbert along with 4 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her brother, Robert (Bobby) Thompson (Janice) of SC.
Joyce and Randy moved from VA to the Dallas, TX area in 1978. She attended East TX State University and worked for several engineering firms as a civil drafter and engineering technician, retiring from Texas Utilities Mining Company in 2002. Her favorite past time was her (since 1964) years of genealogy research to which she devoted thousands of hours during her lifetime. Her other hobbies included sewing, knitting and flower gardening. She and Randy spent their early retirement years traveling in their RV and going on cruises to many parts of the world. Her later retirement years included hiking several times a week, particularly on the many trails in the Texas State Park system.
There will be a celebration of her life followed by burial at Crawford Cemetery, Crawford, TX.
