Virginia Joyce Weed, more affectionally known as Joyce, was born on April 16, 1931, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Ted and Viola (Disbrowe) Pepples. She was baptized in the Christian faith and graduated from Boone High School.
On July 16, 1954, Joyce was united in marriage to Joseph Weed in Boone. They were blessed with three children: DeeAnna Jo, Joseph Charles, and Randall Jay. The family made their home in Glidden, where Joyce worked as the superintendent’s secretary in the Glidden-Ralston School District.
When Joe accepted a new position with the Maurice-Orange City school district, the family relocated, and Joyce became an office assistant, in the accessors office, at the Sioux County Courthouse. Later, Joe took a job as a sales agronomist in Ute, and Joyce worked as a tax preparer in both Denison and Sioux City. After many years of dedicated service, she enjoyed a well-earned retirement.
Joyce was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, where she also participated in United Methodist Women. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hats, and served as a Den Leader for Cub Scouts. A talented seamstress, Joyce created beautiful garments and helped her grandchildren with their 4H projects. She also loved gardening and canning the produce she grew. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed word searches. Joyce and Joe opened their home to Edina, a foreign exchange student from Hungary, and later traveled to Hungary to visit her. They also treasured their trip to Australia. Above all, Joyce cherished time spent with her family and the memories they made together.
Joyce passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton at the age of 94 years, five months and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Weed; son, Joseph Charles Weed; siblings: Lee Pepples, Ted Pepples and Gloria Pitt; brother-in-law, Edward Weed.
Joyce is survived by two children: DeeAnna Weed and husband, Charles Kelly of Postville and Randy Weed and his wife, Lori of Charter Oak; nine grandchildren: Courtney (Kevin) Otuya, Candice Weed, Carmen (John) Terwilleger, Colby Weed, Elyse (Dean) Sorensen, Tanner (Lisa) Weed, Savanna (Zach) Mosbach, Mitchell Weed and Dallas Weed; ten great-grandchildren: Kelby, Rhett, Korbyn, Cooper, Blakely, Archer, Charlie, Brylee, Jax, Amelia and another on the way; caregiver and special daughter, Julie Dobernecker; special daughter, Edina Harmath; and many other family members and friends.
Visitation with family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak.
