Joyce Julia Zuviceh Baker, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on June 26, 2023 at the age of 79. She was born on February 24, 1944, in the 9th ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, the youngest of "The Triplets" born to the late Frederick Alfred Zuviceh and Thelma Louise Voelker Zuviceh.
Joyce shared a beautiful life with her husband, Alton Paul Baker Sr., whom she loved dearly. She is the cherished mother of Diana Baker Plauche (Larry) and the late Alton P. Baker Jr; proud grandmother of Ashley Plauche Jarrell (David), Aimee Plauche Merritt (Nick), Alton Paul Baker III (Natalie), and Katie Baker Fike (Skyler); great-grandmother of David "Rowdy" Jarrell, Austin Jude Jarrell, Bailey Marie Merritt, Annabelle Elizabeth Baker, Harley Rose Baker, Katarina Alexandra Baker, and Alton Paul Baker IV; and caring sister of Fred Anthony Zuviceh, Jane Zuviceh Gonzales (the late Simon), June Zuviceh Sensebe (the late Christian), and the late Betty Zuviceh Gould (the late Alfred). She also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends whom she loved greatly.
Joyce had a fulfilling career as a bridge tender for the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. In her younger years, Joyce loved to play volleyball and softball on teams with a group of women who became her close friends. She also coached her daughter's teams at NORD and St. Raphael School in New Orleans. Joyce was remembered by those she coached simply as "Coach".
Joyce was a parishioner of St. Genevieve Church and her faith was a significant part of her life. She took great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joyce was funny, giving, and caring to those she knew and even those she had just met. She would do anything for her family and friends. Joyce's legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know her.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Joyce's nieces, Jane Gonzales (who was like a daughter to Joyce) and Wendy Ciruti, as well as Jane's wife, Jennifer Buras, who were at Joyce's side taking care of her when Diana and her family were working.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, July 3, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell. A funeral service will begin in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. Memories and condolences may be expressed at www.AudubonFuneralHome.com
