Jozef Svec of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on June 9, 2025, at the age of 75. He was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, on September 5, 1949 to parents Jozef and Gabriela (Brychta) Svec.
Jozef married Josephine (Gabovic) Svec on Easter Sunday in 1970. Recently they celebrated 55 years of marriage. They came to the United States as political refugees from communist-controlled Czechoslovakia in 1970 and built a new life for themselves, fulfilling the American Dream. Joe and Josephine lived in New Jersey, California, and then The Last Frontier (Alaska) where they raised their sons. They later retired to Indiana where Joe was acting as president of the Czech and Slovak Society of Indiana for 10 years.
Jozef studied electronics in Slovakia, but once he immigrated to the United States, he enjoyed a wide variety of careers, including manufacturing, optical sales, construction, financial planning, insurance, and marketing.
He is survived by his wife, children Christopher (Sarah) and Justin (Katherine); grandchildren Eleanor (Samuel), William, Charlotte, Margaret, Michaela, Milo, and John Paul; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jozef had a musical passion for his entire life, playing harmonica, accordion, guitar, and piano, and played in a Beatles cover band in his youth. He loved singing in the church choir at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Carmel, and St. Pius X Catholic Church in Indianapolis.
Joe’s greatest source of joy was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Miloslav.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at 9:30am, June 19, 2025, at St. Pius X Catholic Church (7200 Sarto Dr. Indianapolis, IN). A Funeral Mass will follow at 11am. Private burial services will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery.
