Funeral services for Mrs. Juanita Gortney, age 74, of Ashland, will be held on Tuesday September 2, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland, with Rev. Noel Vickers and Chaplain Clint Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow in the Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gortney passed away August, 30, 2025 at her residence. She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, and had worked for several years at Higgins Slack's and later Higgins Embroidery and New South Embroidery. Juanita enjoyed going dancing with her husband of 58 years (Charles), gardening, taking care of her cats, going to Florida every year, drinking her sweet tea, watching Alabama football and doll collecting.

She is survived by her husband Charles Gortney of Ashland, her sister; Debra Jordan (Pete) of Lineville, two brothers; Paul Mayo "Sparkplug" (Regina) and Jimmy Mayo (Shirley Harris) all of Ashland and several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; James Mayo and Louise Wright Mayo, her brother Ollie Ray Mayo and her sister Helen Oates.

Active pallbearers will be Doug Gortney, David Wheeles, Billy Carr, Tristan Cheaney, Chris Mayo, Wyatt Mayo, Damien Heard, and Blake Potts.

Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Alabama Hospice.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland on Monday September 1, 2025 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Tuesday.
