Judith R. "Judy" George, 82 of Melrose Street, Providence passed away on Saturday May 25th at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. Born in Providence, a daughter of Archibald and Dorothy (May) Gerlach. Judy lived on Veazie Street during her childhood, she loved Providence and telling stories of growing up there, she later moved to Scituate where she graduated from Scituate High School and raised her family. She later returned to live in Providence during her retirement. In addition to raising her family Judy had a 25 year career with the State of RI, beginning at the Juvenile Detention Center before moving to the Division of Labor and Training, formerly Division of Unemployment, where she retired as claims investigator. She was active in the RI State Employees Union during her tenure.
Judy was an avid reader who enjoyed history and biographies. She enjoyed art, traveling and learning about cultures, especially the Latino culture. She was an advocate for the underprivileged and donated her time teaching English as a second language to new RI immigrants as well as becoming a Gray Panther, advocating for seniors in nursing homes across the state. She loved local RI history & politics and often spoke to groups at the Marion Mohr library in Johnston, RI in her retirement on the topic.
She leaves her children, Louisa M. Bishop and her husband Howard G. Bishop, III of Scituate, RI, Caleb K. "Cal" George and his wife Donna of Scituate, RI, Nicholas "Nick" George and his wife Bonnie of Milbury, MA and Anthony F. George of Cranston, RI. She was the grandmother of Amanda L. (George) Salisbury, Brian George, Caleb M. George, Allison E. George and Sofia Brown. She was the sister of the late Carolyn Brush and Rodman Gerlach.
Her funeral was private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society (ACS). American Cancer Society
