Judith Gibson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home - Paris on Jan. 15, 2026.
Judy DeWann Gibson went to be with the Lord at 79 years of age on January 14th, 2026 at Brentwood Terrace in Paris, Texas.

Graveside services will be held at 1pm on January 20, 2026 at Evergreen Cemetery with Jacob White officiating.

Judy was born in Paris, Texas on April 12, 1946 to William Roy and Jo Whitney Gibson. From an early age, two things were clear: her love for animals (especially horses) and her extraordinary, God-given talent as an artist. Even at an early age, she was painting pieces for friends and relatives, and soon began receiving commissions from local ranchers to do portraits of their livestock.

After graduating college from East Texas State University in 1968, she began her wildly successful career as a professional artist. Judy painted thousands of pieces, averaging about 3 paintings a month over the course of her 50+ year career. While she painted many subjects, her love of nature and animals were her true passion. In her words: "When someone looks at my paintings, I want them to see the deep appreciation for God's creations that I feel". She was a member of the prominent Horse Artists Association of America, and her horse paintings were especially outstanding. Her work has been featured on the cover of publications such as the Texas Quarter Horse Association Annual, Arabian Visions, Equine Images, Appaloosa Journal, and the Yellow Pages directory. Her originals and prints were sold in galleries across the country, and her work is still hanging in many local businesses and banks. Despite all this notoriety, Judy remained an extremely humble person, often insisting "Oh I'm not as good as so-and-so".

In her spare time, Judy was a talented horsewoman, who trained and rode many horses over the years. Dogs were also a passion of hers, and she owned a variety of different breeds, from Great Danes and German Shepards to Schnauzers. While she never had any children of her own, she loved spending time with her 3 nephews and cherished memories with them, especially teaching them the fundamentals of horsemanship. Above all, faith was foremost in Judy's life. She was an active member of Lamar Ave. church of Christ for her entire adult life and, while she preferred to remain out of the spotlight, she was beloved by her group of close friends, particularly by the ladies small group she met with.

Judy was a very special woman who will be sorely missed, but she will always hold a special place in the hearts of those blessed enough to know her.

She is survived by her brother, Jackie Gibson and wife Terry; nephews Corey Gibson; Brandon Gibson and wife Melissa; and Matthew Gibson and wife Ashley; as well as numerous grand-nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents William and Jo Gibson.

Honorary pallbearers are Jackie Gibson, Corey Gibson, Brandon Gibson, Matthew Gibson, Kellan Gibson, Brody Gibson, Cooper Gibson, and Teller Gibson.

My deepest condolences to the family. Judy was one of the finest artists ever. Her horse paintings were amazing. I knew her for many years and I learned a lot about art from her.
