Robert Gibson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chandler Funeral Home - Ellettsville Chapel on Mar. 6, 2026.
Robert Eugene Gibson, a beacon of light and a pillar of strength, left this world on March 1, 2026, at the age of 92, passing away peacefully at his home in Ellettsville, Indiana. Born on May 17, 1933, in Johnson County, Robert's life was a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and the enduring warmth of family love.

Robert's journey was marked by his remarkable ability to turn obstacles into steppingstones. Although his education was cut short due to the pressing need to support his large family, he never let this define him. Instead, he channeled his innate intelligence and work ethic into a successful career. Retiring in 1988 as a Maintenance Technician from RCA, Robert's industrious nature didn't stop there. He was a true entrepreneur at heart, skillfully building apartments and houses, and leaving a legacy of growth and development that mirrored his approach to life.

His family was the centerpiece of his existence. A devoted brother to Dessie and brother-in-law to Steve Bowman, Robert was a loving father to his daughters, Patricia (Richard) Shields, and Sherrill Gibson. He was a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather! Grandchildren, Richie (Danielle) Shields, Carrie (Derick) Walls, Bobbie Gibson, Jennifer (Robert) McMillian, Jerry Dean McGlothlin, Summer McGlothlin, Jeremy Gleyze, Michael Shields, Kyle Feaster, Cinnamon (Timmy) Grafe, Bryson Halstead, Kellie Gibson, Mersadies (Matthew) Dame, Vanessa Gibson, and Angel Gibson; Great-Grandchildren, Grace (Dawson) Bell, Ada Shields, Ashley McGlothlin, Savannah Walls, Drake (Maddie) Walls, Drew Walls, Destiny Walls, Erin Gibson, Emily Gibson, Bella Gibson, Christopher, Robert McMillian, Kyra (Houston) Hayes, Jaden Gleyze, Cole Gleyze, Liam Shields, Ivan, Mikey Shields, Alyson Sherrill Shields, Scarlett, Oaklan, Heaven Grafe, Ben, Maverick, Lilith, Smith, Tobias Halstead, and Cal Dame and Great-Great-Grandchildren, Jason, Titus, Tiberias, Brexton, Walls, Zoey, Briley, Holten, Charlotte Walls, and Carter Hayes.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Gibson; parents, Samuel and Mary Gibson; daughter, Teana Kay Gibson; son, Bob Gibson; daughter, Debroah Gibson; brothers and sisters Henry (Opal) Gibson, Kennth (Judy) Gibson, Samuel (Virginia) Gibson Tommy Gibson, Don (Linda) Gibson, Ruth (Bruce) Stewart, Charlotte Bowman, Martha Jane Sloan, Vonnie Gibson, Charles (Berneice) Gibson and Dottie Gibson.

His life was a reflection of his Christian faith, which guided him in his daily actions and interactions. Robert's interests were as diverse as his skills. He loved traveling, indulging in the simple pleasure of dining out with his family, and making people laugh. His visits to Dinky's to peruse farm equipment and animals were always a source of joy. Robert's handiness and friendly demeanor made him a favorite in any gathering! Robert love to make people laugh and was well liked people that new him.

As a man who understood the value of humor and connection, Robert often shared an inspiring thought: "The only way to do great work is to love what you do," a quote by Steve Jobs. This philosophy was evident in every aspect of Robert's life, as he poured love not only into his work but also into every relationship and pastime he cherished.

Robert Gibson's life encourages us to embrace each day with enthusiasm and to recognize the beauty in the bonds we create with others. His legacy is not merely in the structures he built or the work he accomplished but, in the laughter, he shared, the hands he held, and the hearts he warmed. Today, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved. May we honor Robert's memory by living our lives with the same passion, dedication, and kindness that he exemplified every day!
