Gary Byers

Gary R. Byers, 80, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026 at his home. He was born to the late Robert R. and Deloris L. (Taylor) Byers.

Gary was a 1963 graduate of Bloomington High School.

He worked at Westinghouse for many years until retirement. Gary had a love of nature and was an avid outdoors man. He enjoyed hunting for mushrooms, raspberries, blackberries and ginseng. In his earlier years he would plant a yearly garden and help to maintain numerous fruit trees. He loved to fish and hunt small game. Gary was a skilled fisherman. He enjoyed traveling to various lakes in Indiana to go fishing. Gary would often tell stories about some of his most memorable fishing adventures. One such story told of the time he caught a large mouth bass that was so big he struggled to reel it in. As children, we were very captivated by his stories and always eager to join him on his fishing expeditions.

Gary had a passion for basketball that started early on in his youth. He was a lifelong IU basketball fan and loved to watch games with his family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Deloris Byers and his brother Steve Byers.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Karen M. Byers; grandson, Alex Pate; granddaughter, Kisa Byers; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Brad Goodall; granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Madelyn Goodall; Sister-in-law, Karen J. Byers; Nephew , Kyle Byers and wife Ruth; Great-nephew, Solomon Byers and many cousins.

Visitation for Gary will be from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, with funeral services starting at 1:00 pm, on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Chandler Funeral Home, 203 E. Temperance Street, Ellettsville, Indiana. Kyle Byers will be officiating the funeral service. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
