Judith Steenberg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ziemer Funeral Home - East Chapel on May 18, 2025.
Judith M. Steenberg, 85, of Newburgh, passed away Friday, May 16, 2025 at Primrose Retirement Center. She was born February 4, 1940 in Johnson City, NY, to George and Edith (Harding) Miner.
Judy lived in the Binghamton, NY area until she attended college at Cornell University from 1958 to 1962, earning a bachelor's degree in child development. She lived in the suburbs north of Chicago from 1962 until 1976 where she worked as a debt counselor, and also worked as a nursery school teacher in a low-income housing development.
Judy's first love was theater. She was the travel agent for Unified Auditions, a consortium of more than 20 universities that held annual auditions for prospective theater students in four cities. She arranged travel, accommodations and rehearsal spaces for all of the participants. She was a member of the UE Theater Society for more than 25 years and served two terms as its chair. She was the first "outside" member of the Board of Directors of the New Harmony Project and twice served as its chair. Judy was an active participant in the Steenberg Family Foundation that supported the UE Theater Society and the New Harmony Project, as well as other educational organizations. She was a sometimes painter and an avid quilter. Every child and every grandchild has at least one of her quilts.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; her daughter, Lauren (Tim) Jones of Williamsburg, OH; son, Gregory (Cheryl) Steenberg, of Newburgh; grandchildren, Cameron (Kensey), Carly, Katie, Larry, and Kenny; her brand new great-grandchild, Ellie; and sister, Jane Lavender, of Cranberry Twp, Pa.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2025 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A Funeral service will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Tim Garrett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203 USA.

Oh,Judy! What an unhappy surprise. So many good memories - UE Theatre Society - no one loved it more or worked harder for it, than you. Easters at your house for the Theatre students who could not go home for the holiday (rehearsal schedule, you know . . ) - LOTS of food and even egg hunts! You were a strong leader, inspiring others, and an advocate for everything abour theater! Thank you!

Dear Larry and family--

I am sorry for your loss. I have always counted myself fortunate to have crossed paths with Judy. She was thoughtful, kind, creative, intelligent, understanding, giving and intelligent -- an impossibly rare combination of attributes. Know that while I am not able to attend the service, my thoughts and prayers are with you... and Judy.
