Judith Vega-Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary on Dec. 6, 2025.
Judith "Judy" Vega-Brown, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, educator, and friend, peacefully departed this world on November 20, 2025, at the age of 75. Her journey, which began in the vibrant heart of Harlem, was marked by resilience and an indomitable spirit. Born to Jean Bowen and Leon Vega, Judy's early years were marked by the rich tapestry of life in Harlem and Trenton, New Jersey. These formative experiences instilled in her a strength and wisdom that would guide her throughout her life.

In 1957, a new chapter unfolded when Judy's mother married Matthew Greene. As their family grew in Brooklyn and later Queens, Judy embraced her role as a loving elder sister to her brother Matthew. With each new home and school, she approached life with an open heart and an insatiable curiosity, laying down roots that sprouted into deep connections and lifelong friendships.

At the tender age of 18, Judy embarked on an independent journey, settling in Manhattan and the Bronx. These years brought her closer to her paternal family, solidifying bonds that were woven with love and pride.

Education was a cornerstone of Judy's life. After earning her associate degree from City College, she moved to Houston in 1975, where she welcomed her beloved daughter Alexis in 1983. Determined to further her education while raising her daughter, Judy obtained her bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University. Her passion for teaching and nurturing young minds led her to a remarkable 28-year career in the Houston education system. Her colleagues and students alike fondly remember her for her unyielding strength, candid honesty, infectious humor, and profound compassion.

In 2022, Judy bravely faced a diagnosis of stage IV cancer. In the face of adversity, she displayed unparalleled courage and grace, embodying the same virtues she had lived by every day. Her fight was a testament to her inner strength and unwavering spirit.

Judy leaves behind her cherished daughter Alexis Brown; her devoted brother Matthew Greene (Pattranit Greene); her loving Vega siblings; her nephews Matthew Greene Jr., Kobi Greene; and sister-in-law Tita Omeze, and a vast extended family of cousins, dear friends, and countless former students who were touched by her love and wisdom.

Judy was preceded in death by her father, Leon Vega, in 2012, her stepfather, Matthew Greene, in 2023, and her beloved mother, Jean Greene, in 2024. Each of these losses shaped her, but never dimmed the light she shone on those around her.

Judy's legacy is a rich tapestry of perseverance, devotion to family, a passion for education, and boundless love. Her absence leaves a profound emptiness in our hearts, yet her memory will forever illuminate our lives. She will be missed immeasurably and remembered with enduring love.
