Judy M Freed passed away Tuesday, July 16th, 2024 at home with her family by her side. She was born May 1, 1950 to W. Odes Wortham and Elsie (Downs) Wortham in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
The family moved to Wichita in 1954 then settled in the Valley Center area where Judy graduated from high school in 1968.
She earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Education from Wichita State University in 1972 and began her 38-year English teaching career. After two years at Belle Plaine she returned to Valley Center where she taught for 6 years then went to Wichita West High School for 24 years. During this time she earned a Master's Degree in Education with a focus in Curriculum and Instruction in 2000. Her final 6 years were at Metro Midtown Alternative High School.
Judy is survived by her husband, Gary, of Wichita; two sons, Jeremy Broadstreet of Overland Park; Jordan (Rochelle) of Lawrence; one daughter Joanna (Mark) of Wichita; two granddaughters, Leah and Zoe Freed; one sister, June (Dan) Minix of Pataskala, Ohio; and a large extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry Wortham.
Judy's service will be at 11 am Saturday, July 20, at the Valley Center Methodist Church.
Visitation with the family is set for 6-8 pm Friday, July 19, at the Valley Center Community Building, 314 E Clay, Valley Center, Ks.
Judy's family has established a scholarship fund in her honor. Scholarships will be awarded to Wichita West High School students from the Judy Freed Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please consider donating to the memorial fund in lieu of flowers.
