Judy Glesius (nee Martin) of Brecksville, Ohio passed quietly in her home surrounded by family after a brief hospital stay. She was 79. Her health declined in the last eight months as a pair of strokes and a bad fall left her with limited mobility. Throughout that time, Judy was lovingly cared for every day by her husband of 55 years, Fred Glesius.
Judy moved to the Cleveland area as a child and graduated from Midpark High School in 1963. While studying to become a registered nurse, she met Fred Glesius, a student at Case Institute of Technology. They married in 1970. Their first child, Amy, was born a year later. Their second child, Pete, was born after a move to Shaker Heights to care for Fred's aging parents.
At one time or another, Judy worked for all of the major hospital systems in the Cleveland area in some of the most challenging tasks. She was employed at the newly-formed Burn Unit at Metrohealth caring for patients with profound injuries. While employed at the Cleveland Clinic as a charge nurse in a cardiac unit, she was invited to tea with the Shah of Iran, a patient of hers. Her dinner table stories were guaranteed to be interesting, graphic, and funny.
Judy spent many hours volunteering with the schools. She was district PTA council president several times. She co-chaired successful school levy campaigns in Shaker Heights and Brecksville. Judy was also involved with the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools' fundraiser ArtMart for years. She was most proud of being named a Friend of Education by the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Board.
After taking a few years off to raise her children, Judy returned to school to obtain her Physician's Assistant licensure. She graduated with honors and more friends. Judy found her place in the Emergency Departments at Barberton Hospital and then Marymount Hospital, where she worked until 2005. Though in her last visits to Marymount's ED she arrived by ambulance, Judy was remembered by face and reputation by the staff there, with one nurse recalling her as "the best PA they ever had."
Judy loved epic stories and musical theater. She was a devotee of J.R.R. Tolkien: Judy was over the moon each time a Peter Jackson film was released. She loved the Harry Potter books and would pre-order each book so that it arrived the day it was released. She spent her last days in the hospital watching and listening to her favorite musical: Mamma Mia!
Judy found her spiritual home at St. Basil the Great later in life, converting to Catholicism at age 63. There, she found dear friends who enriched her last years. Judy was active in many church activities, but found her calling in St. Basil's choir program, especially the Resurrection Choir. At the end of her life, she enjoyed weekly Bible study dates in her home with a friend.
Judy adored her seven grandchildren, and they adored her. She subscribed to the Playhouse Square Broadway Series for many years and planned outings to the theater with them. She loved taking the grandkids on vacations to Florida theme parks and the Grand Canyon. She wanted to be there to witness the eye-popping wonder of each child's first trip to Disney. She was there to cheer them on at games, concerts, and performances. She radiated her unconditional love of them and was blessed to see each of them in her final days.
Judy is survived by her husband Frederick Glesius, daughter Amy (Roger Buelow), son Peter (Karen), grandchildren Zachary, Maddie, and Katie Glesius & Stella, Phoebe and Sophia Glesius, and Seamus Buelow, brother Richard Martin (Sandy, dec'd), sisters Cindi Koch (Don) and Sharon Gruhn (Erich), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Basil the Great for choir programs are suggested in honor of Judy.
